Victor Wanyama Retires From Professional Football at 34

Victor Wanyama has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34, ending a career that spanned nearly two decades.

The former Kenya captain confirmed his decision in a social media post. He rose from Nairobi’s Muthurwa estate to become one of the country’s most recognised players in European football.

Wanyama began his professional career in Belgium with Beerschot AC before moving to Scotland. After a short spell at Dunfermline Athletic, he joined Celtic, where he established himself as a key player. During his time in Glasgow, he won two Scottish Premiership titles and a Scottish Cup.

He also scored in Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League in 2012, a performance that contributed to his move to the Premier League. He later played for Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, becoming a regular presence in midfield.

At Tottenham, he made 69 appearances and was part of the squad that reached the 2019 Champions League final, where the club finished as runners-up to Liverpool. His performances during this period highlighted his strength, discipline, and composure.

In 2020, Wanyama joined CF Montréal in Major League Soccer. Over five seasons, he made 117 appearances and helped the club win the Canadian Championship in 2021. He continued to play a leadership role within the team during this stage of his career.

At international level, Wanyama earned 64 caps for Kenya and scored six goals. As captain, he played a central role in representing the national team and remained an influential figure for Kenyan football.

In his retirement statement, Wanyama wrote: “Today I announce my retirement from football. A boy from Muthurwa, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch.” He also indicated that he plans to move into coaching and expects to complete his UEFA A Licence later this year.
