Kenyan Man in the US Crushed to Death While Repairing a Car
A Kenyan family is mourning the tragic death of their kin who died in the United States last week.
Jacob Kiprop Birech of Topeka, Kansas, died after a car he was repairing knocked him to the ground on April 6th, according to The Star.
The deceased had reportedly removed the car’s wheels and went under it to make a repair but he accidentally hit the jack and it crushed him.
By the time of his death, Kiprop was doing his Ph.D. studies in the US, where he has been living for several years.
Confirming the incident, his sister Grace Maru said the family from Kiborgok village in Nandi County is devastated by his death.
"He was looking forward to completing his studies but the accident has cut short his promising life," said Maru.
The family is appealing for assistance from people of goodwill to raise the over Sh7 million needed to airlift his remains to Kenya for burial.
There will be a fundraiser in aid of the family on Friday at Sirikwa Hotel, Eldoret, and on Saturday at their home in Kiborgok Village.

So unfortunate what a freaky accident.Most of us of the human male species like to fix things mechanical,expecially if we know how,and see no reason to have someone do it for us , especially if we have the time,and the know how.It just takes alittle disctaction,or lack for concentration for an accident like that to happen.My thoughts and prayers to the family.RIP

It's always advisable after removing the tires keep it under the vehicle just in case the jack fails. You can also use something else like a stone.

You are absolutely right Man. Especially when you are an amateur in this type of work. The more serious issue is that you can be RIGHT their probably standing and watching what he was doing and then suddenly when something like this happens you cannot even help. Why?
because the jack will have collapsed under the vehicle with him and so you cannot even retrieve it to help elevate the vehicle and rescue him.911 will be far depending on the location. So unfortunate indeed. RIP

Actually best to get a heavy duty jack, jack stands and rubber chocks. Always work on a flat surface. If you are a dedicated shade tree or jua kali mechanic, get an actual vehicle lift-best of you have a useable garage

Safety first, always SAFETY FIRST. NEVER crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack. I escaped death several years ago when a car I was about to go under suddenly collapsed as I was just about to go under. Safety first always. My deepest condolences to his family.

Sad ending for a worthless venture. I don't know why he did it, but in the US people don't fix their cars like in Kenya.Its costly and therefore they either engage a mechanic for repairs or junk it!RIP bro 🙏

People in USA fix cars more so than in Kenya.And its not that they dont need a mechanic.Most do it because they know how,and they have time,and like to tinker with things.Not to mentions that it's cheaper to do it yourself if you have the knowledge,and the experience. We do not know exactly under what circumstances lead to this gentleman's demise. Who knows, he may have done every thing right,took all precautions...Hey accidents happen.That's why we have insurance.
