KNEC Admits Error: 133 KCPE Candidates Receive Incorrect Marks in Some Subjects

The Kenya National Examination Council has acknowledged that a total of 133 candidates received incorrect marks on the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam.
After utilizing the SMS code 40054, a significant number of schools voiced their disappointment with the outcomes they received, as stated by Knec CEO David Njengere. Knec also received numerous inquiries from candidates who were anxious about their subpar scores, particularly in English and Kiswahili. Following a thorough evaluation of all the appeals, Knec has verified that 133 candidates were genuinely impacted by the mistakes. Njengere guarantees that these issues were promptly resolved and that the results for the affected candidates were appropriately amended.
Njengere further reveals that there were cases where the scores of candidates were mixed up, leading to Kiswahili marks and grades being placed in the section for Kenyan Sign Language. Furthermore, grades in Science, Social Studies, and Religious Education were mistakenly shortened, resulting in the omission of the customary plus (+) and minus (-) signs. It is crucial to acknowledge that these mistakes only affected the SMS results due to configuration problems, as the results on the KNEC portal were correct. Knec swiftly notified the SMS service provider about the issue, and the error in the text messages was promptly rectified.
To ensure accuracy, candidates are advised to personally collect their official provisional results from their respective schools, rather than relying on SMS notifications. They have a 30-day window to address any concerns they may have regarding their results. The Ministry of Education recently announced the release of the 2023 KCPE examination results, which were taken by a total of 1,406,557 candidates. The highest score achieved by a candidate in this year's exams was 428 marks. While releasing the results, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu revealed a decline in overall performance. The number of candidates who scored 400 marks or higher has decreased compared to the previous year, with only 8,523 students accomplishing this impressive feat out of the 1,415,911 who took the exam.
Additionally, the results revealed an increase in the number of candidates scoring between 001 and 099 marks, rising from 724 in 2022 to 2,060 in 2023. Similarly, those who scored between 100 and 199 marks also saw an increase, growing from 296,366 in 2022 to 383,025 in 2023. Consequently, there was an uptick in the number of candidates who scored below the average mark of 250 compared to the previous year. In contrast to 2022, where only six subjects experienced a decrease in performance, this year witnessed a decline in performance across eight different subjects.

When the results first came out,the Education CS said that all students who partook in the exams would be placed in schools, and they were about 8350 of them.If he is now claiming that there are only about 5300" spaces" available in government schools, does it mean the rest would be placed in private schools?

Is there anything these morons can do correctly or devoid of any corrupt shenanigans??? The CS all the way down to those responsible should be fired immediately! This undermines public confidence and accountabilit! The government of the day must act affirmatively and immediately to show that this will not and will never be tolerated!!!

Banana republic led by near crazy people who are clueless about leading. All they care about is to enrich themselves. Corruption is their religion. Expecting anything from the government is like looking for oranges in a bag of berries. This government needs to resign!

This is a lame excuse. You do not mess around with people’s exams. It’s their life. Fortunately for this government, nothing seems to be going well. What happened with the hustler’s funds? In which country will KES500 start you on a business? The amount cannot even buy two packets of Unga. If this is what we call digitizing, we have a long way to go.

@Joe, read sabotage in most of systems that even UK tried to implement..ministry of Lands etc...even in this one, believe me, teachers are the saboteurs. THEN, misleaders like RAO have shown that protesting, throwing tantrums, and refusing to be 'defeated' is a thing.
Now, here you miss it.....for an individual to create credit worthiness, they have to build it from bottom to top....you get a loan for as much as the tools used show you are worth...but from there, hata kama ni 500-, you repay...get another, repay...on and on and your credit worthiness goes up if you keep borrowing and repaying without default. Isn't this the same thing that happens in the USA? I started borrowing MY OWN 500$ - mine - repaid ...and slowly by the bank trusted me and my credit score rose to where I bought my house on a 4% interest rate. YOU BEGIN SOMEWHERE depending on your previous activity.

@ JustMe,I think the people they hire have alot more to do with this' debacle' than the growing pains of technological learning curve.I prove my point by what has happened to Lakers, the hockey team that just represented Kenya in Africa Club championships.
This team is facing heavy sanctions that will include ban, fines, and other penalties. They violated the Club championship rules by fielding at least 5 players from other clubs.Much like L.A Lakers fielding players from Golden Worriers to play for them in championships or playoff games.
Now tell me who is to blame?Certainly not the players, even though,I believe they new the Non-Lakers players were included. To add insult to injury, these players had to take a 3 day bus ride to Malawi, reaching there with sore legs. Thanks to corrupt officials

@Max, there is sabotage...and of course there is CORRUPTION, which we know all too well. I see sabotage of digitization/computerization.. as an inside job within some major sectors that would benefit the most from it. Hii ya watu wa michezo, the officials, since I can remember, wanaramba, wanapeleka free-loaders/slay queens and the top-layer yote wanachota. If the officials do not even know the rules, talks volumes about incapable sleeping officials.

@ Just me,the officials know the rules. They flout the rules flagrantly with the hope that they could bribe if found out.Case in point, Last week Amarathon runner,James Karanja who was banned from doping something I believe early this year or last year was ran in a race in China and won.
Now tell me if that is flagrant violation of the rules. Don't tell me his handlers did not know about it.By the end of 2023, which is around the corner 50 athletes will have been banned this year alone for doping.
Finally, sabotage, and corruption exist when people running the"show" are incompetent, unethical, indisciplined, diabolical, inexperienced, and should all be in jail,or prison.

Waafrika wa Kenya are among are among the most incompetent, dishonest and sloppiest people on earth. Try relying on them to get anything done without close supervision and you will be sorry. Foreign investors realise this fact very quickly before turning around and taking flight and investing in places such as India, Vietnam, China and even mexico. Kenyans abroad who have tried investing have painful stories to tell. The consequences are what we now see: mass unemployment, a desperate starving government, a collapsing economy, a chaotic political management, a failing education, agricultural, security, disaster management, transportation, literary everything.,..
The wonder of it is that Kenya is still surviving as a state.
