From Nairobi to Adelaide: How Elsy Wameyo Found Her Voice
Elsy Wameyo has established herself as a prominent voice in Australia’s contemporary music scene, drawing on her Kenyan heritage and Australian upbringing to shape a distinct and personal sound.
Born in Nairobi in 1999 and raised in Adelaide, Wameyo creates music that reflects her dual cultural background. Her work blends hip hop, R&B, soul and African-influenced rhythms, incorporating Kenyan languages and themes into modern production.
Her songs address identity, belonging and resilience, connecting with members of the Kenyan diaspora as well as wider audiences. Tracks such as Umva and Conquer highlight her direct lyricism and adaptable vocal style, combining African musical elements with contemporary genres.
Her career has received significant recognition. In 2022, she was named Artist of the Year by Triple J Unearthed, marking a major national breakthrough. She has also won multiple awards at the South Australian Music Awards, including Best Song, Best Solo Artist, Best Release, Best Studio Producer and Best Music Video.
Within the Kenyan community, she has received the Young Kenyan of the Year award and the People’s Choice Best Hip Hop award. Her debut album, Saint Sinner, released in 2024, further strengthened her standing as an artist able to combine Kenyan musical traditions with contemporary Australian influences.
In 2026, plans for an Australian tour, including scheduled dates supporting UK rapper Aitch, were cancelled. Wameyo responded by focusing on independent performances and new material. She has since announced further releases, independent shows and appearances at international festivals throughout 2026.
