H‑1B 2027 Registration: Key Dates, Fees, and Selection Changes
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) opened the registration period for the FY 2027 H-1B visa programme on 4 March 2026.
The window will close at noon Eastern Time on 19 March, and employers must submit registrations through the USCIS online portal. For 2027, USCIS has replaced the traditional lottery system with a “weighted selection process” that prioritises candidates with higher qualifications and salaries.
Previously, the programme allocated 65,000 visas to applicants with at least a bachelor’s degree and 20,000 to those holding advanced degrees from US institutions. The new system is designed to favour highly skilled and higher-paid professionals.
Employers must pay a non-refundable registration fee of USD 215 per applicant, consistent with the previous year. Under Presidential Proclamation No. 10973, some petitioners whose registrations are selected will also face an additional fee of USD 100,000 before filing.
This represents a significant change in the cost structure and may affect smaller companies and start-ups that rely on the H-1B programme. USCIS expects to announce results by 31 March 2026, with notifications sent through official accounts. Selected candidates can proceed with visa petitions and, if approved, employment in the United States.
The H-1B visa permits “dual intent,” allowing holders to pursue permanent residency while working.
