Kenyan Students in Hungary Use Mentorship to Help Newcomers Adjust
Kenyan students beginning their studies in Hungary have been welcomed into the country’s Kenyan student community through a mentorship and orientation programme organised by the Association of Kenyan Students in Hungary (AKeSH).
The gathering was held on 19 September at the Hungarian University of Sports Science in Budapest and brought together new students, alumni and members of the wider Kenyan community. The programme provided new students with an opportunity to receive practical guidance from peers who have already experienced studying and living in Hungary.
Discussions covered academic adjustment, cultural integration and ways of building social and professional networks. Alumni also shared their experiences of university life and offered advice on the challenges of adapting to a new country. Their contributions were aimed at giving newcomers a clearer understanding of what to expect as they begin their studies.
AKeSH held the event under the theme “Global Mentorship for Local Impact”. The association said mentorship, knowledge-sharing and community support can help make the transition easier for students arriving in Hungary.
The gathering also brought together mentors, alumni, partners and other community members, strengthening the association’s role as a support network for Kenyan students. AKeSH said the programme was intended to provide a space for connection, learning and new beginnings.
Student associations and diaspora networks often provide overseas students with practical support as they adjust to new academic and social environments. In Hungary, AKeSH continues to use mentorship, community engagement and knowledge-sharing to support Kenyan students.
