Important to Kenya's economy and societal development are its citizens who live outside the country. Kenyans who work overseas remit billions of shillings each year. Sources such as the Central Bank of Kenya assess that there are over three million Kenyan citizens residing permanently or temporarily in other regions and countries. Although these men and women account for less than one-tenth of Kenya's 50 million population, they contributed $4.027 billion in 2022.

However, the remittances from Kenyans abroad surpassed these figures, claiming the top spot as the main source of foreign exchange.
