45 Kenyans at Risk as Embassy Reveals Extent of Myanmar Scam Crisis

The Kenyan Embassy in Thailand has strongly cautioned Kenyan citizens against travel to Myanmar due to escalating reports of mistreatment.

This warning comes in response to distress calls from Kenyans trapped in notorious scam operations within the country. In recent weeks, embassy officials have been working diligently at the Myanmar-Thailand border to secure the release of ten Kenyan nationals who have expressed grave concerns for their safety. These individuals are reportedly held captive by criminal cartels operating in the region. Embassy sources reveal that cartel leaders are demanding substantial ransoms for the release of the Kenyans, claiming they initially acquired them for approximately 45,000 RMB each.

The criminal groups insist that the Kenyan government must reimburse around $12,000 per person for their safe return. Despite the Kenyan government's ongoing negotiations for the victims' release, the volatile environment continues to complicate rescue efforts. The embassy has noted with concern that despite numerous warnings disseminated through various media channels, young Kenyans continue to travel to Myanmar. Many fall victim to fraudulent recruitment agents by paying significant fees for non-existent job opportunities. Those ensnared in these criminal enterprises face gruelling conditions, often forced to work up to 19 hours daily with minimal rest.

Individuals deemed unproductive or unwell risk being sold to other companies or released under similarly exploitative conditions. Alarmingly, the embassy has compiled a list of 45 additional Kenyans believed to be working in various scam compounds, as well as those who have managed to secure their release after paying ransoms. Some Kenyans have reportedly chosen to remain with the cartel networks, participating in trafficking operations for profit. The situation is further complicated by ongoing civil unrest in the region, with many scam operations now under the protection of insurgent groups.

The Kenyan government has been actively involved in efforts to secure the release of its nationals, working closely with local authorities and international organizations. The embassy continues to provide support to victims and their families, offering counselling services, legal assistance, and ensuring access to necessary medical care. They have also been raising awareness about the dangers of travelling to Myanmar, urging young Kenyans to verify the legitimacy of job offers before travelling abroad.
