Ruto Skips Scheduled Meeting with Kenyan Diaspora in New York

President William Ruto did not attend a planned meeting with Kenyans living in the United States over the weekend, despite earlier expectations that he would engage with the diaspora community during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The event, held in Manhattan, attracted around 50 Kenyan nationals, some of whom travelled significant distances to participate. Attendees included Mr Adonga Kiharangwa, who flew in from San Francisco, and families who drove from cities such as Rochester and Boston.
Many waited for hours at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel, anticipating a brief appearance by the President. In his absence, Kenya’s Ambassador to the United States, David Kerich, addressed the gathering. He acknowledged the community’s disappointment and assured those present that a future engagement with the President would be arranged.
He also emphasised the government’s appreciation of the diaspora’s contributions and concerns. Despite the setback, the meeting proceeded as an open forum, with Ambassador Kerich facilitating discussions on several key issues. Participants raised matters related to trade and investment, skills development, social welfare, diaspora services, and civic participation.
Immigration emerged as a key concern, with particular attention to the challenges faced by Kenyans in detention or at risk of deportation. Immigration lawyer Otieno Ombok outlined ongoing legal support efforts by Kenyan attorneys in the US.
While Ambassador Kerich stopped short of offering concrete commitments, he pledged to convey the community’s concerns to the relevant ministries in Nairobi.
He also encouraged stronger engagement between the diaspora and Kenyan diplomatic missions. Following the formal session, attendees gathered at Frieda Restaurant, owned by Kenyan entrepreneur Paul Kioko, where they shared a meal featuring African cuisine. The informal setting offered a moment of cultural connection and networking, even as disappointment over the missed engagement with the President remained.
