Seventeen-year-old Rohan Shah, an emerging talent in wildlife photography, recently garnered international acclaim by winning three major awards, solidifying his position as a noteworthy figure in conservation advocacy.
A student in the 11th grade at the International School of Kenya, Rohan has travelled extensively, photographing wildlife across more than eight national parks and game reserves in Kenya and beyond. In a recent interview, Rohan details his photographic achievements, noting his recognition in several prestigious competitions. He was a runner-up in the 14 and under category at the Travel Photography of the Year 2022, received the People’s Choice Award for Travel Photography in 2023, and most recently, was a runner-up in the Young Photographer category at the Nature 2024 awards.
“In total, I have three international photography awards,” Rohan shared.
Rohan's accomplishments extend beyond photography; he is also a dedicated athlete, representing Kenya's Under-18 rugby team. His multifaceted interests include philanthropy, evidenced by his involvement in a charity concert aimed at raising funds to establish a library at a primary school in Maasai Mara. Collaborating with organizations such as the Maa Trust and Ghetto Classics, and prominent figures including Andrew Ngatia, a former member of the Sauti Sol band, Rohan has played a pivotal role in ensuring the initiative's success.
“We collected funds to help build a library in a primary school in Maasai Mara and donated furniture to the school,” he explained.
Inspired by influential wildlife photographers like his mentor Jeffrey Wu, Rohan's work reflects a deep commitment to conservation. He aims to motivate the younger generation to appreciate and protect wildlife. He further emphasizes the urgent need for conservation efforts.
“As a Kenyan, having wildlife at my doorstep has made me see the ever-changing need for conservation. I wanted to showcase this through my wildlife photography,” Rohan remarks.
Balancing academics with his photography requires significant discipline, which Rohan actively promotes. He emphasizes the importance of prioritizing education while pursuing personal passions. “School is a priority, of course, but when I get time, I go into the field and take photos. You have to balance everything by making sure you have your schoolwork done first and then have your hobbies fall into place,” he advised.
Rohan credits his family's unwavering support as a key factor in his success. His parents, Neel and Bhavisha Shah, along with his younger brother Raheel, have been instrumental in his journey, providing both encouragement and a strong foundation. His father, Neel, recounts how Rohan's determination and skill led to a breathtaking image, despite the lack of specialized equipment.
“As a family, we are close. Rohan is a very balanced individual, and we always make time for family. It’s a proud moment when our children can follow their dreams,” Bhavisha stated.
A significant moment in Rohan's photography career was marked by a challenging helicopter shot that earned him a crucial award nomination.
Looking ahead, Rohan hopes to combine his passions for wildlife conservation with future career aspirations in engineering or sports. He advocates for greater government support for young talents and investment in conservation initiatives, particularly within the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, to safeguard Kenya’s rich tourism heritage.
