Peter Munya Moves to Withdraw Petition against Kiraitu Murungi's Victory as Meru Governor

Former Meru Governor Peter Munya has filed a notice to withdraw his petition challenging the election of his successor, Kiraitu Murungi in the August 8th election.

Accepting the application by Munya's legal team, Meru High Court judge Justice Francis Gikonyo instructed Munya to publish the notice in a newspaper with national circulation. He also ordered the parties to return to court on December 4th for further directions.

Outside the court, Munya and Kiraitu, who are former allies that turned rivals, embraced in a rare show of unity since their fallout in 2015. Speaking to the media outside the court, Munya said the withdrawal application followed the unity plea by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Munya pledged to give Kiraitu time to work and deliver his vision to the county. In October, President Uhuru promised to appoint Munya to the government once he withdraws the case.

"The President told us he wanted a united Meru and expressed his will to work with me in the national government," Munya said.

Kiraitu was declared the winner of Meru governor seat after garnering 281,737 votes, with Munya  garnering 232,569 votes. Kiraitu contested on President Uhuru's Jubilee party, with Munya under the Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket.
