Gov't Reinstates Bodyguards, Passports of NASA Leaders after Kenyatta-Raila Unity Pact

The government has reinstated the security detail of National Super Alliance (Nasa) leaders which had been withdrawn after the mock swearing-in of opposition leader Raila Odinga as people's president on January 30th.

Also restored are bodyguards of 160 Nasa Members of Parliament, who were recalled in the ensuing state reaction to the controversial oath.

The move to reinstate the bodyguards of the opposition figures comes barely days after President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga held a meeting on Friday and agreed to work together to unite the country.

Opposition leaders who also had their passports and firearms licenses revoked will get them back. The withdrawal of security, passports, firearms licences and arrest of some of Odinga’s lieutenants was part of a state crackdown on organizers of the swearing in event.

Some of the Nasa leaders affected in the withdrawal of passports, bodyguards and firearms licences include Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC's Musalia Mudavadi, Siaya senator James Orengo, former Machakos senator Johnstone Muthama, strategist David Ndii, businessman Jimmy Wanjiji and several MPs.
