The government has moved to assure that no case of Ebola has been reported in the country despite a recent outbreak of the dangerous virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Addressing the press at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday, Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, however said that state health facilities are capable of handling any cases that may arise.
“We have strengthened the routine screening of travellers at JKIA and as well as all the entry points into the country totaling 43, in all these places,” the CS said.
The government had earlier this week announced that all visitors coming to Kenya from DRC and other Western Africa countries through different entry points will undergo intense screening.
“The Ministry of Health has installed one electronic thermal screener, handguns and other support systems,” CS Kariuki said.
“My ministry established the National Health Emergencies Council to work expeditiously to prevent importation of any virus or disease. Adequate measures have been put in place to ensure that such a virus will not be introduced in the country,” she added.
Her Tourism counterpart, Najib Balala said the government has maintained constant communication with DRC officials, who assured that the situation is under control.
“However, we will still be doing screening of visitors particularly those from West Africa,” Balala said.
