I Have Not Fled Nairobi, Governor Mike Sonko Says

Governor Mike Sonko has dismissed reports that he is running Nairobi from his rural home in Mua Hills, Machakos County for fear of his life.

This comes after he allegedly held two Cabinet meetings at the rural residence, where he has spending time after the government withdrew several police bodyguards attached to him last week.

Photos of the said meeting showed some of Nairobi executives including; Charles Kerich (Lands and Housing),  Allan Igambi (Tourism and Trade), Mohamed Dagane (Transport and Roads),  Larry Wambua (Environment), Emmah Mukuhi (ICT), Veska Kangogo (Devolution), Janet Ouko (Education), Hitan Majevdia (Health) and other officials seated in a roundtable together with the Governor.

However, in a statement dispatched to newsrooms by County Deputy Director of Communication Elkana Jacob, the Governor denied shifting his office to his rural home.

“I don’t know why people are claiming that Governor Mike Sonko is under ‘siege’. The City Governor has homes in several towns: Garissa, Kisumu, Mombasa, Kilifi, Malindi, Machakos, Nairobi, among others."

“Furthermore, he has a right to hold meetings in any of his homes, so we should desist from making utterances that depict Sonko as hiding,” read a statement from City Hall Deputy Director of Communication Elkana Jacob.

Sonko had earlier revealed that he had retreated to Machakos where he felt "a bit safe" after learning that there were plans to eliminate him.

"My troubles started when I called Nairobi police boss Mr Kamwende and told him I want to write a statement against this one man who has threatened to eliminate me," Sonko said.

"I have to cut down on my movements. This is a serious threat to my life because of this one man and his cartels," the governor added.

Speaking to K24 on Tuesday, Sonko’s wife Primrose Mbuvi, said she feared for the life of her husband and had not seen him since Friday.

“Since Friday, sijaona my husband, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko. He has not been around in his Nairobi home because of the security, he fears for his life,” said Primrose.

“Security has been withdrawn; both for night and day. All have been taken away including his bodyguards. We are living in fear; especially the children who are not used to this kind of life,” she disclosed.
