More than 200 Kenyans Killed by Floods

More than 200 Kenyans have lost their lives as a result of floods caused by the ongoing heavy rains across the country, Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) says.
Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Abbas Gullet further said that over 300,000 people have been displaced, while 22 counties have been placed under floods watch.
“Those who have died as a result of the raging floods are slightly over 200 and many more have been displaced. We are continuing to assist the affected families and we will go on doing so until the rains cease,” Gullet stated.
Some of the most affected counties include, Tana River, Kilifi, Garissa, Turkana, Marsabit, Samburu, West-Pokot, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Trans-Nzoia, Nakuru, Mombasa, Makueni and Bomet, the Red Cross further said.
In Tana River and Kilifi counties, there are currently about 115 camps hosting those who have been rendered homeless, the organization said.
In a statement, the Kenya Meteorological Services Department said the heavy downpour will continue until the end of May, with 40 counties likely to experience flooding.
A number of people died as a result of landslides in Murang’a and Nandi counties.
