Millions of Kenyans Stranded as Safaricom Suffers Massive Network Outage

Millions of Safaricom subscribers were for the better part of Sunday unable to access crucial services on their phones following a massive network outage.

The outage, mostly experienced in Coast and Lower Eastern regions, affected call, messaging and data operations.

Those affected said they could not make calks, send messages or use the internet. Mpesa transactions were also affected.

In a statement, the telecommunication firm said the network hitch was as a result of multiple fiber link cuts.

“We wish to apologize to our customers and partners that are currently experiencing voice and data outage, caused by multiple fibre link cuts affecting critical transmission equipment,” the statement reads in part.

“This has resulted in loss of Voice and SMS services in Coast and Lower Eastern regions, as well as general data unavailability across the network, affecting services operated through the internet,” said Safaricom in a statement.

“We are working to restore the services as soon as possible, and apologize for any inconvenience caused,” reads the statement.
