Nairobi Man Narrates His Family's Encounter with Highway Robbers along Southern Bypass

A Nairobi motorist has taken to social media to narrate his family's encounter with highway robbers along the Southern Bypass on Friday morning.

His story has been shared on the Motorists Association of Kenya Facebook page, attracting thousands of reactions from Kenyans online.

The man says he was traveling upcountry together with his family for the Easter holiday when the incident happened at around 3 pm.

Here is the motorist’s narration:

“I left Nairobi this morning [Friday] at 3am for shags with my family; [we] used [the] Southern Bypass to connect with Waiyaki Way; almost reaching at Kikuyu interchange just 3km to Waiyaki way; stretch between Karen Interchange and Kikuyu interchange; thugs put two building blocks [machine-cut building stones] on the road for the two lanes towards Waiyaki Way."

“So, I hit one of the stones and my whole front left wheel; tyre plus rim is shattered into pieces; I manage to safely bring the car to a stop; thanks to God and the weight of the car I’m driving; it doesn’t swerve; it balances and safely come to a stop."

“Immediately I stop, two middle-aged men – [let’s] say between the late 20s and early 30s – appear with metal rods. I’m out of the car and my family is still in the car, I alert them to lock the car, which they do and I am now out alone; another car hits the other remaining block and this time this one veers off the road and hits the rail; one more thug joins the other two and now we about to be robbed.

“This time I had opened my boot for my weapon too and thank God another oncoming motorist stops and starts hooting with hazards on, other oncoming vehicles come and all stop and now the thugs panic and run away. God is with us and we live to see another day again.

“So, I kindly alert all of us to be safe and avoid Southern Bypass at night or wee hours of the morning; it’s not safe at all.”

Avoid at night or wee hours of the morning, this happened at 3PM! Middle aged? Those are young men. Sad that they choose to do this to their countrymen. I'm happy to hear their plan fell apart

@Lavanox, I didn't know there is a curfew on? We are a free country, free to travel, eat, make merry, etc whenever we fancy. Fear should not be barrier to our freedom. @Anderson....had to smile at your dismay re: middle age… I realised ages ago that middle age in Kenya means somewhere between 25 - 30, after that, heck, one is simply elderly! What chance do the rest of the population have with one foot in the grave?
