Over 900 Kenyan Healthcare Workers Infected with Covid-19
The number of Kenyan healthcare workers who have contracted coronavirus in the line of duty has passed the 900 mark.
The tally of medical practitioners infected with the disease stood at 905 as of Wednesday, according to the head of the public health department Susan Mutua.
“As of Wednesday, 905 healthcare workers had turned positive for Covid-19. We must be at the frontline to protect ourselves from this virus,” Ms. Mutua said on Friday.
This represents 2.6 percent of the total number (34,884) of Covid-19 cases confirmed in the country as of Friday.
Mutua said the Health Ministry is committed to containing infection rates among the front-line workers.
She was speaking in Tudor, Mombasa County during the launch of a Sh200 million African Medical and Research Foundation’s (Amref) training for health workers and community health volunteers in 10 counties.
Under the program, Amref will train health workers from counties severely affected by the pandemic on infection protection and behavior change on Covid-19.
The counties include Mombasa, Kwale, Nairobi, Meru, Embu, Kisii, Homa Bay, Migori, Siaya and, Kakamega.
Kenya has so far reported a total of 34,884 cases of Covid-19, 21,059 recoveries, and 589 fatalities.
