KEMRI Confirms Outbreak of Influenza in Kenya

A survey by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has revealed there is an outbreak of influenza in the country.
KEMRI says four out of 36 samples collected tested positive for Influenza A, a contagious viral infection that can have life-threatening complications if left untreated. The infection attacks the lungs, nose, and throat.
The institute has urged Kenyans to continue observing the Health Ministry’s COVID-19 protocols.
On Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe played down the severity of the outbreak, saying there was no cause for alarm.
“There are things we observe before we go into panic mode for instance the severity of the flu, hospitalization, and fatalities. So far the statistics we have do not point to a situation that should cause panic,” Kagwe assured.
Kenyans on social media have over the last few days complained of acquiring widespread flu-like symptoms such as headache, fever, tonsillitis, blocked nose, and chest.
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Thursday announced it is vaccinating its health workers against the flu.
The vaccination exercise is supported by the Washington State University, which carries out research on infectious diseases in Kenya.
“It’s on a first-come-first-served basis. 400 slots are available each day,” KNH said in a statement.
