Two Arrested After Beer Worth Sh6 Million Goes Missing at a Kenya Army Canteen

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of beers and beer stock cash worth Sh6.9 million from a Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) canteen in Isiolo.
Peterson Kariuki Mbita and Boniface Kimathi Kinyua, both staff members at the canteen, are being detained at Isiolo police station pending further investigations.
The money was reportedly lost gradually after the Electronic Business Suite system at a canteen of Isiolo’s 78 Tank Battalion and School of Artillery (SOA) was manipulated.
The loss was discovered following an audit of the books handled by the two civilian members of staff who worked at the cafeteria. It occurred on diverse dates between January 2021 and January 25th, 2022.
Kariuki and Kinyua are accused of engineering the loss of Sh6.6 million and Sh301,000 in stock and stock cash respectively.
“Preliminary audit report indicated that Kariuki was responsible for loss of Sh6,637,953 while Kimathi could not account for Sh301,259 in form of physical stock and stock cash,” reads court documents.
Investigating officer Corporal Joseph Kibet said auditors need to do a thorough analysis of the audit books to conclusively establish the total cash stolen.
