Lawyer and activist Kebaso Morara was on Friday assaulted by delegates at the Bomas of Kenya during a public participation exercise concerning the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Morara, known for his outspoken stance on the impeachment, has taken to social media to recount his ordeal. He describes being initially barred from entering the venue and, upon gaining access, denied the opportunity to address the public. The situation quickly escalated, with delegates throwing chairs at Morara, forcing him to flee for safety. Video footage circulating online captures Morara being escorted from the premises, visibly shaken and injured. The public participation exercise at Bomas of Kenya is part of a broader initiative to gather citizen input on the proposed impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua.
“I was barred from entering Bomas at the gate. When i finally got in, I was denied the mic at Bomas floor. Chaos erupted. I am hurt. Headed to hospital. I live to speak another day,” his post reads.
Opposition lawmakers introduced the motion, accusing Gachagua of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The impeachment process has been marked by heated debates and public demonstrations. Supporters of the Deputy President argue that the impeachment is politically motivated, while opponents maintain it is necessary to uphold accountability in public office.
The attack on Morara has elicited swift condemnation from various quarter with human rights organizations and civil society groups calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible. Political leaders have also weighed in on the incident, with some facing criticism for their alleged role in inciting the violence. Ruaraka Member of Parliament TJ Kajwang, who was present at the event, has come under scrutiny for allegedly encouraging the crowd's aggressive behavior.
Despite the attack, Morara remains resolute in his advocacy. Known for his fight against corruption and impunity in Kenya, Morara has argued that both Deputy President Gachagua and President William Ruto should be held accountable, suggesting that if Gachagua is impeached, President Ruto should also vacate his seat, as they were elected as a pair. Morara's determination to continue his work has garnered support from many Kenyans.
