Babu Owino Signals ODM Exit Over Party's Alliance with Ruto Government

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has publicly announced his intention to leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
He cited internal pressures following the party’s alliance with President William Ruto's administration. This decision arises amid recent political developments in which several allies of Raila Odinga have been integrated into the Kenya Kwanza Cabinet, a move interpreted as a strategy to mitigate Gen Z-led protests against the government.
During a gathering with his constituents in Mihang’o, Kayole, Babu reiterated his commitment to opposing any government actions deemed unfair to the Kenyan populace. Babu further shared insights from a recent discussion with Raila Odinga, affirming that his primary allegiance lies with the people of Kenya rather than party loyalty.
“I was campaigning for Raila, but I told Baba that I will not support a government that is unfair to the people of Kenya,” Owino articulated, highlighting the potential repercussions he faces, including the threat of expulsion from the party in 2027.
Despite these looming threats, Babu remains resolute in his stance. He questions the merit of fearing expulsion from ODM, insisting that his electoral success is a result of divine intervention and the will of his constituents.
“It is God who chooses leaders,” he stated, reflecting his conviction about the role of faith in his political journey.
Babu also expressed profound respect for Raila Odinga, whom he regards as a significant mentor in his career. He urges Kenyans to support Odinga's candidacy for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission, emphasizing Odinga's capabilities and the necessity for a united approach in supporting his bid.
“We will not fear anyone, and we will respect Raila Odinga as our political father,” Owino declared, calling for collective prayers for Odinga’s peace and success.
In a speech delivered on Thursday, December 19, at the Harvest Church Grounds during a bursary cheque issuance ceremony, Babu indicated a potential bid for the presidency in the upcoming election. He firmly rejected suggestions to align with President Ruto's government and asserted his commitment to making decisions that prioritize the welfare of his constituents.
"I have been advised to support Zakayo. Should I do that and continue oppressing you? Please allow me to make my own decisions. I know my mother didn’t give birth to a fool. I will make the right decision for my people; isn’t that okay?" he said.
Further into his address, Babu humorously alluded to potential candidates for the vice-presidential position, particularly responding to the crowd's speculation about collaborating with Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. He urged his supporters to maintain focus and unity, reiterating his commitment to advancing their needs and interests as he prepares to navigate the complexities of a presidential campaign.
