A man and his girlfriend in Nakuru have been remanded for 21 days in connection with the alleged murder of Tabitha Wambui on Christmas Day.
Senior Resident Magistrate Emmanuel Soita has ordered Benard Ngugi to be detained at Kiugoine Police Station, while his counterpart, Esther Njoki, will remain at Nakuru Police Station during the ongoing investigation. Corporal Vincent Langat, who is overseeing the investigation, discloses that Wambui's mutilated body was discovered inside a gunny bag in Ngugi's kitchen in Ngomongo village, Mawanga.
Preliminary examination of the body revealed severe injuries, including trauma to the head and chest, mutilation of private areas, and the removal of the eyes. Ngugi has emerged as the prime suspect; he was arrested on December 27 at Tumaini Trading Centre in Nyandarua. Njoki was apprehended on December 25 in Gathadia, Tumaini, after evidence linked her to the crime scene.
Eyewitness accounts place the couple together around 7 PM on the day of the murder. Earlier that day, Wambui had been employed at Bazz Bar in Ngomongo, where she worked before leaving with Ngugi for drinks. They were last seen departing the bar at approximately 12:45 PM. The gruesome discovery of the body was made by Juliana Waihuini, Ngugi's employer, who noticed blood seeping from the gunny bag while collecting gate keys at around 9 PM.
Concerned neighbours, along with Waihuini, promptly alerted the authorities.
Langat has requested an additional 21 days to finalize the investigation, which will include forensic analysis of the suspects' mobile devices and further examination of evidence collected at the scene. The police are also working to recover Wambui's missing body parts and plan to conduct DNA testing.
Additionally, psychiatric assessments of the suspects are scheduled before their court appearance, and further arrests may occur as the investigation progresses. The court is set to reconvene on January 16, 2025.
