No Disruption at UoN Following Historic Building Fire – Chairman Anangwe

In the aftermath of a fire incident at the University of Nairobi, Council Chairman Amukowa Anangwe has reassured the public that university operations will continue unaffected.
In a statement on Thursday, Anangwe indicated that there is no cause for alarm and affirms that teaching and examination schedules will proceed as planned. Having been briefed about the extent of the incident, Anangwe confirms that the university has adequate funding for essential repairs. The exact cause of the fire, which reportedly took place in the Mahatma Gandhi Wing, remains undetermined.
Investigative agencies are currently on-site, and Anangwe emphasizes the importance of refraining from speculation. Notably, he reports that there are no injuries associated with the incident. Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Francis Mulaa has elaborated on the situation, stating that the blaze damaged significant areas, including the Senior Common Room and the Chancellor’s Parlour, both of which have historical importance, dating back to 1963.
Mulaa attributed the rapid propagation of the fire to the aged timber used in the construction of these structures. Prof. Mulaa extends gratitude to the Nairobi County Fire Services for their swift response, which played a crucial role in controlling the fire and minimizing damage. He also acknowledges the quick action taken by Kenya Power and Lighting Company in shutting off the power supply, along with commendations for police assistance.
The fire reportedly originated in the kitchen of a restaurant located within the Mahatma Gandhi Wing before spreading to adjacent areas. Central Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Stephen Okal confirms that while the fire was initially contained past midnight, it reignited at dawn, necessitating a second intervention from the fire brigade around 5 am on Thursday.
Okal highlights the historical significance of the damaged structure and expresses optimism that the cause of the fire would be ascertained expeditiously.
