A series of burglaries in Kilifi County's exclusive Vipingo Ridge community has raised serious concerns about security in this high-end, gated estate.
The latest incident, occurring on Tuesday at approximately 6:30 a.m., has further destabilized the sense of safety among residents, especially following an initial reported burglary last week at the home of a prominent national government official, which was subsequently denied by authorities. Vipingo Ridge, known for its luxury amenities including a golf course, wildlife sanctuary, and private beach club, experienced its most recent breach while the homeowner was reportedly out of the country in Belgium.
The caretaker discovered the theft, which involved a range of stolen items, including a smart TV, a heater, and various household goods. According to an official police statement, the burglars most likely accessed the residence through sliding doors that had been left unlocked. A high-ranking police officer, who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, confirmed that a multi-agency security team is currently investigating, with assistance from neighbouring Mombasa County units.
However, as of now, no suspects have been apprehended. Despite extensive security measures that include vigilant personnel, a three-meter-high perimeter wall, and 24/7 CCTV surveillance, the efficacy of the estate's defences has been called into question following these incidents. Residents also have the option of additional security features such as panic buttons and mobile response units, which include trained canine teams.
Heightened concerns among residents have prompted some speculation regarding the possibility of internal conflicts within the estate's management contributing to these burglaries. One anonymous resident suggests that recent leadership changes might have led to tensions, potentially motivating acts of sabotage. This claim is emphasized by the recent resignation of a security manager, illustrating ongoing internal struggles.
Vipingo Ridge's CEO, Alex Horsey, corroborates the occurrence of three distinct thefts recently, although police investigations are active in only two cases. While one homeowner has successfully recovered stolen items, the outcomes for the remaining incidents are still pending. Mr. Horsey stresses that these events appear isolated and confirms that security protocols on the estate have been reinforced, alongside a comprehensive safety and security audit aimed at identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities.
Despite these security challenges, Vipingo Ridge continues to attract wealthy Kenyans and international visitors, drawn by its serene coastal setting and stunning views, which include the picturesque Chodari Hills. An on-site airstrip adds a layer of privacy for high-profile residents, allowing them to arrive and depart discreetly. Nevertheless, the recent burglaries have undeniably unsettled the community and triggered a critical reassessment of the estate’s security framework.
