Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made serious allegations against President William Ruto, claiming he was offered Sh2 billion in return for his resignation.
Gachagua reveals that during discussions, President Ruto suggested that stepping down could pave the way for Gachagua to vie for future political office. However, he expressed scepticism regarding the President's intentions behind this proposal. Gachagua further alleges that financial incentives were extended to Members of Parliament and certain senators to support an impeachment attempt against him.
“The President asked me to step down, promising Sh2 billion for a comfortable retirement with proper security and a good salary. He also suggested that I could run for office later. However, I questioned his intentions since he was asking me to resign,” he stated.
He claims that each MP was offered Sh500,000, while select senators were allegedly promised Sh10 million to bolster the impeachment effort. As speculation mounts over his eligibility for future government positions following his recent ouster, Gachagua clarifies he is not pursuing political office out of desperation. He states that running for a political seat is not a necessity for him. When addressing the topic of his successor Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Gachagua refrained from commenting, recognizing the distinction between an elected official and an appointee.
He indicates that he holds no grievances against Kindiki but chose not to elaborate further, stating his focus remains on his own endeavours. Looking ahead, Gachagua is scheduled to outline his political roadmap on Sunday, February 9. This announcement will follow consultations with elected leaders, professionals, religious figures, and other stakeholders, providing insight into his future steps in the political landscape.
“I don’t want to talk about Kindiki. I am an elected leader. I cannot talk about an appointee. I have no problem with him. I am doing my own things,” he said.
Gachagua has further refuted any involvement in the anti-government protests that were led by the youth in June-July of last year. In a recent interview with Citizen Digital's sister outlets—Mulembe FM, Vuuka FM, and Sulwe FM—the former Deputy President, who was impeached last October, accused President William Ruto of attempting to link him to the demonstrations as part of a scheme to oust him from his position. Gachagua claims that as the protests, dubbed the "Gen Z uprising," gained momentum, Ruto had already been seeking to remove him from government.
He alleges that Ruto convened a meeting with his allies, claiming Gachagua was mobilizing the youth, an assertion Gachagua describes as unfounded. The protests last year resulted in significant political repercussions, including the withdrawal of a controversial finance bill proposing tax increases and the disbandment of Ruto's Cabinet. In the interview, Gachagua expresses his unwavering support for the youth of Kenya, highlighting their potential influence in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
What else have we not heard from this villager.? The next one coming from him will be something like “ the president tried to sleep with my wife and I refused “.
While all these allegations are being made, it’s not clear that Gachagua couldn’t serve in the same government. Why then wouldn’t he have resigned? Why fight to get retained and up till “ heart attack “ moment when he realized that he would be finally impeached?
Why launch a counter ouster case in court challenging demanding his reinstatement? And to serve in same government he is vilifying?
Yes he is right to say that he was elected by the people. But yet the selecting authority for deputy president lies sorely with the president. Gachagua wasn’t elected as a representative of the Mt. Kenya but the assistant of the president to run all Kenya without tribal inclinations amongst other constitutional mandates.
Right now he is using church and funeral podiums as his political platforms.
The last time I heard him was when he was wooing other tribes “ but the log book remains in Mt Kenya “ as he puts it . He didn’t learn anything about being impeached for among the reasons that he is tribal. Kenyans let not be cheated twice.
And he is still tribal.
