Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced plans to convene a meeting with officials from the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, which includes representatives from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Jubilee parties.
This decision follows a crucial High Court ruling that has confirmed the Azimio coalition as the majority faction in the National Assembly. The ruling, issued by a three-judge panel comprising Justices John Chigiti, Jairus Ngaah, and Lawrence Mugambi, declared the actions of Speaker Moses Wetang’ula unconstitutional. Wetang’ula's prior declaration of the Kenya Kwanza coalition as the majority was deemed invalid, particularly his move to classify 14 Azimio members as new entrants to Kenya Kwanza, which was found to contravene constitutional provisions.
Speaking at a funeral service in Kitui County, Musyoka indicated that he has been in discussions with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta regarding the implications of the court's decision. He outlines the significance of the upcoming Parliamentary Group meeting set for Wednesday, where coalition leaders will strategize on the next steps in light of the ruling.
Musyoka voices the need for Azimio parliamentarians to realign their roles in accordance with the court's directive, asserting, “The situation is that Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya is the majority party. I have spoken to Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta. On Wednesday we want a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting after you have met on Tuesday so that we can organise ourselves.”
The Wiper Party leader also criticizes the administration of President William Ruto, noting that the court's decision delivered a substantial setback for leaders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition. He emphasizes that this ruling serves as a cautionary lesson for former Azimio members who have left the coalition, urging them to reconsider their political affiliations.
Musyoka specifically targets ODM politicians who have joined Ruto's cabinet, mentioning Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi as an example, suggesting that such politicians may face challenges due to their recent political manoeuvres.
“Those who were praising Ruto, I know you ate feeling awkward; you could have been patient and waited. These friends who ran to join Ruto, I suggest they do introspection,” the Wiper party leader said.
