A political schism has erupted within the Azimio la Umoja coalition after Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to pursue collaborative governance.
The move has triggered accusations of betrayal and uncertainty regarding the stability of Kenya's political framework. Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has voiced strong opposition to the agreement, citing a lack of consultation with Azimio coalition members. Kioni contends that Odinga's alignment with Ruto compromises the ongoing National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) process and endangers the integrity of Kenya's electoral system.
''We were all over here as Azimio when we were campaigning. Even if you decided to go, why don't you tell those you were with that you are going? You cannot just bolt out as if you have stolen something,'' says Kioni.
These concerns are emblematic of a growing sentiment of marginalization among Azimio members. Echoing these sentiments, Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi cautions that the Odinga-Ruto partnership overlooks the desires of a significant portion of the Kenyan populace. Mwangangi further stresses the need to address long-standing issues of corruption and impunity.
Former Mosop Member of Parliament Vincent Tuwei has questioned Odinga's trustworthiness, suggesting he may ultimately betray President Ruto, reflecting deep skepticism regarding Odinga's motives. Conversely, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, an ODM member, has endorsed the MoU, positioning it as a catalyst for national unity.
''Our current President is confused as he does not know where to go and what to do. They are all expecting Raila to give a direction. Let me tell you, do not rely on Raila as he can change at the 11 hour and there is nowhere you can go,'' Tuwei says.
Barasa's support emphasizes the diverging viewpoints within ODM. The alliance between Odinga and Ruto has generated uncertainty about the future of the Azimio coalition.
''I want to say here today that we support the handshake of Raila and Ruto. This is because it will help in the development and bridging of unity in our country,'' Barasa maintains.
