New Seven-Storey Gikomba Market Aims to End Years of Fire Disasters

Nairobi County has completed the construction of a new seven-storey Gikomba Market complex, aiming to end years of devastating fires and improve safety for thousands of traders.

The modern facility, located along Quarry Road, will accommodate more than 1,700 traders in a secure and organised setting. It is part of a wider county initiative to upgrade markets across Nairobi and protect small-scale traders who have repeatedly suffered losses due to frequent fires at the old Gikomba site.

For decades, the market, one of the city’s largest hubs for clothing, household goods, and hardware, has been associated with overcrowding, unsafe structures, and poor fire prevention measures. Governor Johnson Sakaja, during an inspection of the new building, described the project as a major milestone for the market and its community.

“For years, Gikomba has been a place of pain for many families who’ve lost everything to fires. We committed to end that cycle of loss. What we’re building here is not just a market; it’s hope, order, and dignity for our traders,” he said.

The new complex includes a range of facilities designed to improve safety and convenience, such as basement parking, cold storage units, a youth centre, a day-care centre, and designated areas for hardware businesses. The inclusion of these features reflects Nairobi County’s effort to integrate social amenities within commercial spaces, especially those serving low-income traders.

Although the county has presented the project as a key part of its urban renewal plan, concerns remain about the relocation process and trader involvement. Previous attempts to reorganise Gikomba have led to tensions, with some vendors fearing displacement or reduced income. The success of the new market may depend on transparent communication and inclusive management during the transition.

Similar market developments are underway in other parts of Nairobi. In Dagoretti South, construction continues on the Mutuini Market, which will accommodate more than 500 traders and include cold rooms, butcheries, improved drainage, and better lighting to enhance hygiene and safety.

The projects are being implemented in partnership with the national government, which has expressed support for county-led efforts to improve service delivery.
