Tharaka Nithi Governor Njuki Appointed CoG Vice Chair After Kahiga Resigns

Tharaka Nithi Governor Onesmus Muthomi Njuki has been appointed Vice Chair of the Council of Governors (CoG) following the resignation of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.

Njuki’s promotion comes shortly after he was named CoG Chief Whip on 6 October, a role considered second in influence to the Vice Chair. He previously chaired the CoG Health Committee, where he played a key role in discussions on national health policy.

Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has been appointed Chief Whip, filling the position Njuki vacated. Cheboi’s appointment follows a period of reshuffles within the council, which saw Nandi Governor Stephen Sang move from Chief Whip to chair the Resource Mobilisation and Partnerships Committee.

Kahiga resigned after a video emerged showing him speaking in Kikuyu, suggesting that the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga would redirect government resources to the Mount Kenya region. The comments prompted widespread criticism.

Kahiga later apologised, claiming his remarks had been misinterpreted, but accepted the need to step down, saying: “In noting the huge public interest that this issue has generated, I am taking responsibility for the real and perceived meaning of my remarks and as a result, therefore, I have decided that with immediate effect to step down as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors.”

The council convened an emergency meeting following the incident and passed a vote of no confidence in Kahiga. A statement from the CoG confirmed his removal and indicated that further disciplinary measures would be considered.
