Lumumba Affordable Housing Project Set to Transform Kisumu’s Urban Landscape

The Lumumba Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu is reshaping the city’s urban landscape and advancing the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.

Set for completion in June 2026, the development includes 2,384 housing units across social, affordable, and market-rate categories, with amenities such as schools, hospitals, and recreational facilities. Located in Kisumu Central Constituency, the project is already having a positive impact on the local economy.

More than 1,200 workers are employed at the site, with local vendors providing meals, benefiting small businesses in the surrounding area. The development is also part of a broader initiative that spans 111 constituencies across Kenya, aimed at promoting socio-economic empowerment through integrated infrastructure.

The project includes a range of housing options to accommodate different income groups, with 452 units under social housing, 1,192 under affordable housing, and 740 at market rates. This diverse approach aligns with the government’s goal of inclusivity and sustainability.

The design incorporates key amenities within the development, as well as access to nearby schools, shopping centres, and public services. Education officials have praised the project's location, which is close to schools such as Kaloleni Muslim Primary School, Kisumu Polytechnic, and United Mall.

Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Amb. Julius Bitok, highlighted the development’s contribution to Kisumu’s educational and social infrastructure.

Security is another key focus of the project, with police stations being integrated into the development to enhance safety and reduce crime.

Dr Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration, emphasised the importance of secure living environments for the well-being of families and businesses. The long-term benefits of the project extend beyond housing. It is expected to create employment opportunities, with many workers gaining formal certification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme.
