The Kenyan national football team Harambee Stars is gearing up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers which commence on Friday.
However, the team faces a challenge as they must play their home matches abroad due to the absence of FIFA-approved stadiums in Kenya. Consequently, their opening Group F fixture against Zimbabwe will take place at the Mandela National Stadium in Uganda. Harambee Stars find themselves in a formidable Group J, alongside five-time African champions Cameroon, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Despite the strong opposition, the team, under the guidance of coach Engin Firat, is determined to secure a spot in the continental tournament. Their last appearance at the Afcon was in 2019, and they aim to make a triumphant return.
Kenya's historical record against Zimbabwe is encouraging, with the team remaining undefeated in their four previous encounters. This includes three victories and one draw, with their most recent win coming in July during the COSAFA Cup. In that match, Kenya emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline, thanks to goals from Austin Odhiambo and Benson Omalla. A major concern for the team is the fitness of their star striker and captain Michael Olunga. The Al Duhail forward has been sidelined with an injury since August 23, and his availability for the crucial match against Zimbabwe remains uncertain. Olunga's potential absence creates a significant void in the Harambee Stars' attack, raising questions about who will lead the offensive line.
Several players are poised to step up if Olunga is unable to play. Benson Omalla, who has been in impressive form and previously scored against Zimbabwe, is a leading candidate. Other attacking options include Jonah Ayunga, who plays in Scotland, John Avire, and Victor Omune from AFC Leopards. These players will be crucial in providing the necessary firepower for the team. Following their match against Zimbabwe, Kenya will face Namibia in South Africa on September 10. Coach Firat is expected to employ a pragmatic strategy, emphasizing defensive solidity while seeking to capitalize on counterattacking opportunities against both Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The midfield, featuring players like Kenneth Muguna, Anthony Akumu, and Timothy Ouma, will play a pivotal role in the team's success. Experienced defenders such as Joseph Okumu and Eric Ouma will be relied upon to maintain a strong defensive line. Former national team coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee has offered his insights on how Harambee Stars can secure their place in the 2025 Afcon. He stresses the importance of winning all designated home games, even if they are played outside Kenya. Mulee urges the team to avoid making excuses despite the challenges they may face.
Anthony Akumu, a key player for the Stars, expresses confidence in the team's ability to qualify despite the tough group. He highlights the quality of the squad and the support they receive from fans and various quarters. Akumu believes that with additional effort, the team can successfully navigate through the group stages.
Wow, with all these stadia we have, not even one is FIFA approved, and how long have we been playing football?
Anyway, what I would like to know is, does it really make any difference with who is the head coach? The beef I have with KFA is this desire to run to mzungu country for a couch.Come on, are you serious that we cannot get a Kenyan coach to successfully guide the stars to championship? They have the same knowledge right?
One thing I know for sure is that, if you have mediocre players,no couching staff can turn them into winning stars...Example, if you constantly run 10 secs.in 100meters,It would be very hard for you to suddenly run 9.75...even with the best trainer in 100meters.
We can get the best tennis couches for Angela Okutoyi, but she would not be a Serena Williams. You get my drift? This is not a knock on Angela
