Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe Resigns after 37-Year Reign

(AFP) Robert Mugabe resigned as president of Zimbabwe Tuesday, parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda announced.

This brings the curtain down on a 37-year reign of Mr Mugabe.

Mugabe was swept from power as his autocratic rule crumbled within days of a military takeover.

"I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation... with immediate effect," said speaker Mudenda, reading the letter.

The bombshell news was delivered to a special joint session of parliament.

Lawmakers had convened to debate a motion to impeach Mugabe, who has dominated every aspect of Zimbabwean public life since independence in 1980.

Zimbabwe: Where things stand

It was greeted on the streets of the capital Harare with car horns and wild cheering.

It capped an unprecedented week in which the military seized control, tens of thousands of Zimbabwean citizens took to the streets to demand the president go and 93-year-old Mugabe wrestled to remain in power.

Mugabe had ruled Zimbabwe almost unopposed since the country won independence from Britain.

But his efforts to position his wife Grace as his successor triggered fury in the military that had underpinned his regime.

Doreen, what has God got to do with Uhuru's election? Alot of christians votes for Uhuru, and Iam sure many more voted for RAO.So if uhuru won, then God Was on his side,I would think.Yes God id Great, let him bless Uhuru so that he can rule Kenya well.God will also help RAO to work with Kenyans of forward progress, and not cause chaos,by burning property, and people getting killed.

The UNCEREMONIOUS Removal of Mugabe will come to HAUNT Zimbabwe.1. Jomo Kenyatta (as OUTRAGEOUSLY Corrupt as he was) died in Office. 2. Robert Mugabe was the Most Educated President in Africa (listen to his Speeches/ Search for his Credentials). 3. He gave COLONIAL Land to His People (Unlike Jomo Kenya who GREEDED(sic) the LAND for Himself and His Cronies). 4. Nowhere has Mugabe (CRITICALLY) been Mentioned for being CORRUPT. 5. He was Old and Headed toward the End of His NATURAL Presidential Tenure. 6. These young GOONS don't know the Terrain Mugabe went through Fighting for Zimbabwe's Independence.

Guest1 - You are right about Mugabe, they do not know what awaits them with all this liberation . I hope Mnangagwa does right for Zimbabwe but word has it he is as corrupt. If that rumour is true, then an opposition will be formed to out him and if he resists then you know what next . A clear example is SA. Everyone had high hopes of that country , now .......................... so I'm one of those not celebrating this liberation , just like I didn't celebrate when Gaddafi went down - the situation in Libya currently pathetic. So as much as Mugabe was not the perfect leader , he probably tried to protect his people from West exploitation . It is coming .

The west cannot wait to get the untouched resources in Zimbabwe! You will see how they will descend on that country and if the new leader is a stooge and easily bought for pennies, Zimbabwe will miss their Mugabe.
