Gov't Declares NASA's National Resistance Movement (NRM), 33 Others As Criminal Organized Groups

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has named National Super Alliance's National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the list of organized criminal groups in the country.

In a gazette notice dated January 30th, the CS outlawed NRM and 33 other groups as per the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act, 2010. This comes only hours after Nasa leader Raila Odinga took oath of office as ‘People’s President’ at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 22 of the Act, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares National Resistance Movement (NRM) to be organised criminal group for the purposes of the Act,” according to a gazette notice dated January 30.

The movement was named together with other renown criminal groups including terrorists groups like Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda and Taliban.

During its formation, Nasa said NRM would fight for electoral reforms as well as push for boycott of products and services from companies it alleged contributed to subverting the will of Kenyans.

Other groups declared criminal alongside NRM include, Al-Shabaab, Amachuma, Angola Msumbiji, Banyamulenge, Baghdad Boys, Charo Shutu, Chinkororo, Coast Housing Land Network, Congo by Force, Dallas Muslim Youth, Forty Brothers, Forty-two Brothers and Jeshi la Embakasi. Others are Jeshi la Mzee, Jeshi la King’ole, Japo Group, Kamjesh, Kamukunji Youth Group, Kaya Bombo Youth, Kenya Youth Alliance, Kosovo Boys, Kuzacha, Makande Army, Mombasa Republican Council, Mungiki Movement, Mungiki Organisation, Mungiki Sect, Republican Revolutionary Council, Sabaot Land Defence Force, Sakina Youth, Sungu Sungu, Siafu and Taliban.
