Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's 'Bad Behaviors' Exposed

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's 'bad behaviors' have been exposed by some of his officials who spoke to the Daily Nation on condition of anonymity.

A County Executive Committee (CEC) member exposed Sonko's alleged antics and the unusual workings of his office. He exposed the flamboyant Governor as one will little respect for protocol or procedures and prefers to deal with issues in a casual manner.

“In the middle of a serious discussion, he may remember that he was to send someone money, picks his phone and starts giving instructions to the person on the other end. You have to wait for him to finish,” said the CEC on dramatic cabinet meetings chaired by Sonko.

Another senior official at the Governor's office revealed that his boss is used to drinking Cognac at his office from as early as 10am.

“What got me worried when I started working for him is the idea of drinking in the office. Yet interestingly, his confidence level increases and the tone changes once he has taken considerable amounts of the drink,” the official is quoted.

He said that Sonko uses apple juice packages to camouflage his drinking at the office and is occasionally joined by some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

Further, the officials said that former Kamukunji Member of Parliament Simon Mbugua, now an East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP,  is one of the Governor's most trusted allies and who influences a majority of his decisions.

They also say that Sonko's personal friends always hang around his office, even during crucial closed-door meetings.

“The guy is chaotic by nature, there is no privacy in his office, his confidantes, Shaw (Peterson Kimenye) and Jamal (Otieno Ombok) are all over the place, even when the governor is in a meeting with a guest,” an unnamed member of Sonko's team is quoted.

A top official at the county hall said that the Governor has put them in fear as he placed CCTV surveillance cameras to monitor each move they make.

“Nobody is safe here, you never know when you will be fired, we are being monitored all over, we are under constant surveillance, there are CCTV cameras in our offices, our phones are tapped, there are spies all over us, whether in office or out there in the bar,” a top official says.

Another official claimed that Sonko never pays attention and is always on social media even when an important matter is being explained to him.

“When you take, say, 10 issues to him, by the time you are on the third item, he has lost concentration. He will begin checking his WhatsApp messages or log into Facebook for updates on things that are trending. And all his handlers know this. The moment you see that happen, you will be wasting your time if you continue talking to him,” an individual familiar with Sonko’s operations told the Sunday Nation.

“He has no regard for procedure, process or protocol. He does what he wants, when he wants, how he wants it and with whom he wants it,” another aide said.

He is an elected official. Sometimes you get what you wish for so Nairobians got what they deserve. Just like our buddies across the pond.

You elected a clown and you got one. What are you complaining about? The guy is obviously overwhelmed. He is not cut out for the job. Period.

this sounds like a smear campaign by a malicious disgruntled employee or former employee looking to discredit sonko. kenyans amuse me with their cheap tactics of getting revenge at someone.

When Sonko was running for governor he stated that he choose a policy wonk/technocrat (Polycarp Igathe) so that he can tour the city to ensure field work is being implemented.

Word for word he told BBC news 'Nataka jamaa ameshika mbuku kiasi kaa running mate wa mi ndio askume waks ya offe na mi kaa Sonko nipige malap mtaa kuhakikisha waks inaskumwa poa jiji yote'

He has a degree from Methodist University.

@ Kolole, I agree with you on that. Someone is out to soil Sonko's name. This is politics, there are those who will like you,and those who like hate you regardless of your policies.
What wananchi want from Sonko is service delivery. The guy's life has been threatened, that's bad enough to unnerve anybody.I still believe that its still too early to give him a final grade. Its not even a year since the fellow sat on the helm.

Funny this comes out after all the money and panga routes he has closed off from cartels. Yes, he may be unorthodox, however, look at where Kidero got the City with his PHD. Let the guy do his job!

Sonko applies unconventional methods but he delivers. The elite including lawyers and some intellectuals are disappointed because they wrongly believe that their degrees earn them an absolute right to lord over the peasants and hoi poloi who comprise the majority and whom they treat with contempt and disregard. Sorry folks, Sonko is here to stay, and more 'sonkos' are on the way as the people continue to assert themselves. Get used to it.

Actually there are some areas governor have done pretty well.. He should be given time so that he can perform

Education ensures that those in leadership positions have a global perspective on governance issues. Sonko is incapacitated in this respect
