Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Gets 25 Doctors from the US to Help Improve Service Delivery in County Hospitals

25 medics from the United States arrived in Nairobi on Monday ahead of their deployment in four county hospitals within the city.

Nairobi County said the medical practitioners will work in Pumwani, Mama Lucy, Mbagathi and Mutuini hospitals for two weeks. The medics include 10 specialists from Hope International Organization based in New York.

Nairobi County acting Health minister Veska Kangogo said the coming of the specialists is part of Governor Mike Sonko administration's plan to transform city medical facilities to meet international standards.

The official said the medics will offer cancer treatment, pediatric and cardiology services among others. Amy Korir who is leading the delegation from the US said the team will help county staff deliver services.

"We are eager to help the communication and healthcare professionals here with our knowledge and skills for the time we will be here," Oncologist Ogoti Kalu said.

While welcoming the visiting doctors, Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Nairobi branch secretary-general Thuranira Kuagiria said their counterparts from Kenya are ready to learn from them.

"The doctors will help in training local medics for the short period they will be in the county. We can all learn something from each other," Thuranira said.

In Kenya your head cannot be opened for free. That is a lie.

Kenya public hospitals don’t have enough food for their patients. It’s so sad.

They don’t have enough medicine, beds, bed sheets, Jik, soap.

You go to public hospital you better do your shopping first because those hospitals are not like American hospitals. They lack almost everything.

Rumor has it, the money for medicine and supplies was stolen by corrupt goverment officials.

This is nice but—-
Did they carry medicine?Or they arrived empty handed?

Kenya hospitals have no medicines and supplies.

Are patients going to be cured with skills???

People need to stop playing foolish games.

Kenyan doctors are there but with no medicine, beds and supplies.
They tell people to buy supplies and medicines.
People are sharing beds and sleeping on benches which is unhealthy.
Kenya hospitals needs medicine, beds and supplies.

Kenyan doctors need to work in a good environment otherwise they will move to private practice.

Then do your part to alleviate some of these problem, form a Diaspora group , help instead o writing questions with no answers here behind the keyboard- you are part of the problem. I was impressed to see some NC folks who helped a despot elderly lady in Muranga the other day. Be part of change instead of yapping here and finding negativity in anything and everything .............hiyo tuu.

I will create a diaspora group to raise money for kenya hospitals once the thieves and corrupt government officials are arrested, charged and taken to prison.
The stolen money has been recovered.

Am not a fool. The thieves are in Afya House.

These hoes ain’t loyal.

Instead of airing questions here on Mwakilishi, write to Amy Korir and ask all these strategic questions. Dismissing something without fact findings itatuua. Just saying

I don’t know anyone by the name of Amy Korir.

If she is a doctor in Kenya she should visit hospitals like Kenyatta National Hospital which has insecurity, lack of medicine, lack of supplies and lack of beds.Mama Lucy has no beds, medicine or supplies like bed sheets and Jik.
Even the food is insufficient.

The whole world knows Kenyan hospitals especially public hospitals have no medicine.

The lack bed sheets, beds, food for patients and Jik for disinfecting things.
The whole world knows this.

Yes we all know the deplorable conditions of the Kenyan health care including the greedy doctors who moonlight in many clinics while providing mediocre services, we don't lack doctors, they exist but have drowned into self serving , get rich quickly schemes, so if we have sabbatical doctors for a few weeks who might save a soul, its better than nothing and that should be a norm for all professionals in medical field from Diaspora, if at all, helping and caring as a doctor is your calling ....If I were a Doctor I would ......

Am glad Kenyan doctors are opening up private clinics and working in private hospitals.

The Kenya government has failed to maintain public hospitals and Kenyan doctors should not be the ones suffering in the name of 'patriotism'.

let the Kenyan government hire Cuban doctors to treat patients with imaginary drugs.

Kenyan doctors should avoid working in mortuaries called Kenyan public hospital like Kenyatta National Hospital.

let them hire Cuban doctors....Kenyan doctors avoid these government hospitals.

Eh wait until you take a loved one in those so called private clinics, I experienced it first hand and Kenyatta hospital would probably saved our relative life. Keep praising those private clinics until you experience the other side of it .. greed, greed, mediocre services and hefty payments

I welcome wageni, but is two weeks enough to impact much?Ihope so.Considering we are way bellow the WHO recommendation of 1 physician per 1000,this means a lot of patients dont see doctors. This is the angle from which we have to operate. We need enough doctors to meet our needs.Cubans and Americans will leave. What are our long term plans to meet WHO recommendations,or surpass it?Do we even care...

Their will be no major impact...Even the Cuban doctors, very minimal impact.

@Diana is right.

Doctors don't cure diseases.
Medicine cures diseases.

(Real medicine not fake china medicine.
By fake I mean medication that has no medicinal value.I don't mean generic medicine).

Doctors just diagnose. Kenya hospitals lack basic things like food for patients, disinfectant, soap, towels, beds.

Am glad Kenyan doctors are woke and avoiding these public hospitals.

Why not invite your own kenyan doctors in the US and have them help? They have seen both worlds and maybe have a better understanding and experience?

Jamama (not verified)     Tue, 08/14/2018 @ 09:35am

Sonko has budgeted more money for 10am tea and mandazi than for health in his budget. Doctors will do nothing if there is no equiment and medicine.
