Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Renames Pumwani Maternity Hospital after Himself

Governor Mike Sonko has announced that Nairobi's Pumwani Maternity Hospital has been renamed Sonko Pumwani Women’s Hospital & College of Nursing & Midwifery.

In an announcement, the Governor said the renaming follows a deal struck with two hospitals for upgrade of the medical facility.

“I’m happy to announce a new partnership deal with Agha Khan University Hospital & Nairobi West Hospital to transform Pumwani Maternity Hospital. Open link for more details of the upcoming new Sonko Pumwani Women’s Hospital & College of Nursing & Midwifery,” Sonko said in a social media post Friday evening.

The new development comes a week after the hospital was placed on the spot over the deaths of 12 infants under unclear circumstances.

The deaths of the babies was discovered following Sonko's impromptu visit to the facility after receiving reports that hospital staff had allegedly switched off machines where the kids had been put.

Following the incident, Sonko suspended top officials at Pumwani Maternity Hospital including the entire board. The facility's Superintendent, Catherine Mutinda, Administrators Zadock Angahya and George Nyadimo and obstetrician gynecologist James Kamau were some of those sent home.

“All those responsible for this negligence will face full force of the law. I’m not going to allow this to happen to our mothers, they must take responsibility for the deaths,” said Sonko after discovery of the bodies.

The 12 corpses were found stuffed in separate polythene bags – one containing six bodies, another with five and the last with one body.

@Romeo23, this remind me of those old days when Moi used to name so many places "Moi and Nyayo". The immigration database will not have any problem with the new name. They will just put new name of Pumwani for people who were born after a certain date. Kenyatta hospital was once called King Geroge

@Ronno, If you do not know anything silence is the best answer. Moi named so many schools after himself. Even the school I attended was named Moi. He visited us so many times eventually the name was change to Moi.

I don't think has the power to do that....especially naming after himself.
Last time I checked, such naming was done posthumously....save for living presidents.....not every Dick, Tom and Harry.....or maybe Sonko is just that dick...

Coming soon: Sonko University of Nairobi, Sonko Central Bus Station, Sonko Nairobi River, and Sonko Nairobi National Park. President Mwai Kibaki did wonders for Kenya's economy for 10 years and named nothing after himself. Small minds are so disgusting!

He's not naming it after himself, his name is MIKE MBUVI. Sonko is a nickname imposed by admirers but it really is a slang meaning RICH or " bossy". So if the new name happens to stick, it will suggest that hospital serves the rich and bossy, quite a misnomer considering the kind of people it serves.

RUBBISH.I was born at Pumwani and there is no way my origins can be renamed after a prison escapee,Sonko. And i challenge Noordin to investigate how Mbuvi's jail break case ended.Haji should investigate his predecessors-Tobiko and Wako and deal with three of them accordingly.

Very bad example. Perform and wait for your actions to speak for themselves. Let Kenyans do the renaming once they find it fit to do so. God help Kenya!!
