Kenya Airways Lures Kenyans Living in the US with Discounted Tickets

Kenya Airways has announced a discount on flight tickets for Kenyans living in the United States.

The airline says Kenyans who fly on its newly launched direct flights between New York and Nairobi will enjoy a 10 percent discount on tickets and luggage fees.

Kenya Airways hopes this move will lure the more than 100,000 Kenyans living in the US to sign up for its new service launched three weeks ago.

“The special rate for the Kenyan diaspora is only available for bookings made directly on our website,” KQ’s area manager for the Americas, Stephen Ngamau says in a notice pinned at the Kenyan Embassy in Washington DC.

“We encourage guests to enroll onto our database for more updates and offers… We look forward to having the Kenyan diaspora aboard Kenya Airways soon.”

Ticket prices on the Nairobi-New York route will sell at between $790 and $1,050 depending on the booking period.

KQ Management is still celebrating the maiden flt from NBO to JFK. Hope they will wake up. From KQ website, JFK-NBO round trip, depart 10 Dec and return 1/1 is $2225. Emirates and Quatar cost is $1100 (<half price), while Ethiopian From IAD is $1200.

FYI There is no option for 10% discount at the site, but it does not matter.

Even if they give Free tickets, they won’t get customers.

Jubilee supporters need to stop believing their own lies.

100,000 Kenyans in America?? Where exactly are these Kenyans?

Most Kenyans go back to kenya after a certain period of time.—-One way.

KQ has lost its mind.

Instead of a direct flight, make a stop over in Ghana or Nigeria and drop or pick up passengers and you will always have enough travelers.

They have no demand for KQ services in the Kenya community living in America.
Even if they offer free flights, they won’t get customers.
There is no demand.

Majority of those who travel— travel once every 2 to 5 years. Very few Kenyans travel on regular basis between kenya and America. Less than 1000.

Hahahaaa.....
1. There is no market for Kenya airways.
2. Where do these 100,000 Kenyans live because I have never seen more than 5 Kenyans entering a plane going to Africa from America.
3.The only Kenyans flying to America and Kenya on regular basis are Kenyan politicians and diplomats.

As for regular Kenyans, we have jobs, school , friends, immigration issues and families in America.
We go to kenya after two , three years.... sometimes even 5 years or 10 years , 15 years.

Their is just no market for this business by KQ.

Be serious Guys when doing serious business. charging $1000 more than other airlines looks like a joke to us.i would better spend 22 hours on my journey to Kenya rather spend an extra $ 1000. KQ, please put your acts together and be realistic.

Right now they should be working on connecting with other airlines within United State. Not everyone within JFK

Vin (not verified)     Thu, 11/15/2018 @ 06:38pm

The issue here is they do not understand the landscape here. NY alone cannot provide enough passengers going back...
I would love to fly KQ but the logistics to get to JFK from other states are tricky. It wouldn't make economical sense for me to fly to JFK with my luggage just to board KQ. Emirates is an option here.

Diana, Kenya is not Jubilee or ODM, it's for us all. The flight is not only to ferry Kenyans but tourists, UN personnel and business people as well. Kenya is for us all and if it goes belly up, we all feel the sting. Be the difference you want to see but not the peanut gallery that only sees challenges but offers no solutions.

Dear KQ, fix your prices and stop with the bs and cheap publicity. Even wazungus are not ready to pay usd 2000 for a 15hr flight to nairobi when your competitors are offering 20hr flights to nairobi at usd1200. The assumption that people will simply pay more even though google flights readily shows them savings of about usd500 by simply taking an alternative flight is misguided. Get the basics right, then and only then start with hyping that time difference. By the way, spending 2 or 3 hrs at Schiphol isn't such a torture...

Waruri (not verified)     Thu, 11/15/2018 @ 08:26pm

I travel to Kenya twice or three times a year for Mission Purposes.
Was there in De and June. Going there again in 3weeks Dec 1st. I just purchased a Ticket KLM from Dulles Washingtom DC Via Amsterdam for $906 while KQ was going for $2145 and I have to drive to NY or catch a bus/train.

~No Deal KQ~

Boss wacheni mchezo.Do you how much beer I can drink in Kenya with an extra $1000(103,560 Shillings)......I can even open an extra temporary kuku kienyeji job with the $1000 rather than give it to you just for a direct flight.

Robert mbuthia (not verified)     Fri, 11/16/2018 @ 08:11am

Kenya Airways must at least match the rates offered to Kenyans by other flights. Kenyans in America can fly to America at $1,500 dollars through London, Paris and other cities. Flying with family is really expensive so Kenyans will not be able to afford the direct flight

njai (not verified)     Fri, 11/16/2018 @ 04:20pm

Ithink they need to rethink the two terms "Non-stop" and "direct". Nonstop does not make business sense here especially if you have to pay an extra 100k just to save 5 hours. That's a big joke. Stop on the way, pick more passegers provided that your passegers don't change frights. Don't get obsessed with nonstop.

I would suggest that Mwakilishi share this conversation with KQ, of cause after deleting @Diana's hate speech. Very useful for our National carrier.

Mosee (not verified)     Sun, 12/02/2018 @ 04:17pm

😂😂😂😂this is funny. A KQ flight goes for $2700. An Emirates fligjt goes for $1800. So am using an extra $900 to save 5 or 6 hours? Am not boarding..sorry.

And then ujinga ya bags kupotea..hallo this is the 21st century.

And lastly, KQ mtakuwa assassinated chakula kwa ndege😂
