Kenyans Ranked Among World's Most Dishonest People

Kenyans Ranked Among World's Most Dishonest People

Kenyans have been ranked among the world's most dishonest people in a recent study carried out in 355 cities in 40 countries including Nairobi.

The Swiss were named the most honest people among the 40 nations followed by Norwegians, Dutch, and Danes.

On the other hand, the Chinese were ranked the most dishonest followed by Moroccans, Peruvians, and Kazakhstani. Kenya emerged position 36 out 40.

In the survey, researchers dropped wallets containing cash in public places as part of a social experiment.

The research question was, "Does the amount of cash in a lost wallet impact how likely a person is to return it?"

Researchers dropped off over 17,000 identical wallets in public places such as banks, theatres, museums, post offices, and hotels among others.

The wallet would be placed on the counter by the research assistant, who would then take it to an employee telling them they had picked it on the street but were in a hurry and had to go.

Each of the wallets had a grocery list, a key, and three business cards written in the local language using fake but common male names and an email address, to indicate that the owner was a local resident.

Some wallets had no cash, while others contained $13.45, adjusted for purchasing power in the target country.

The survey's overall finding was that people are likelier to return wallets with more money.

"The experiment, which cost Sh60 million ($600,000), is unparalleled in its magnitude," reported AFP.

I agree with MHalisi...sadly so.
I'll not be surprised if the research was undertaken by some western idiot. No respect for research....coffee used to be bad for you....high cholesterol was an indicator of poor health...fluoride was baaaad.....NOT ANY MORE. Why? Because research can be manipulated to support the results the undertaker wants. UPUS!

It's true. I have travelled and lost items abroad and got them back. In Kenya that happens 1 time out of a million. I have lost 3 laptops...money and documents to my fellow Kenyans because they were dishonest

Not surprising at all. Kenyans are led by thieves as the US ambassador has been saying since he took up his post. The newspapers are scandal after scandal. The ordinary kenyan sees nothing wrong with leaders who still public resources.

Sasa hii list inasaidia aje? Naming names and such... Does not change the fact of the death of said marriages... Remember no one can hold someone nor steal someone in a commitment. A person chooses of their free will to kaa masaa. Adultery, infidelity and all other evils will be here tomorrow as it is today and from generations prior. Count your losses and find another who may or may not cherish you.

@ Sebi, good reponse. I have told guest 1 that cheating wives are equally to blame why does he/she blame only men?Infact, very few men married or not will turn down aroll in the hay with avery attractive woman married or not,if they can get away with.So usually the women hold the key to the "sin gate".
Guest 1 wants to turn women into robots.Nobody can break your marriage,or relationship, but you.And there is nothing wrong with arelationship ending.Iwould rather be single than live in hell of a relationship,or marriage. After all marriage is not for everyone. Some find that when deep into it already...

I have told my women friend gazillion of times , nothing gets stolen that does not want to be stolen. Some women sees me as triple threat when I'm among their significant others ( perhaps they are highly insecure not that I'm better looking or BUT I just do not walk around with a chip on my shoulder) , I always think, errr it is not that hard if there are two willing humans, hata uangalie simu, laptop, memorize password, scourge through his facebook etc. Kama hakutaki, hakutaki , hiyo tuu. Why do people walk in relationship trying to own someone, either they are with you because its is real or munatumiana somehow. If love dies, people, walk off and there is always someone willing to love you and value you elsewhere. Ati stolen , kwani watu ni peremende ya peni moja! Maxiley I'm with you on this one, heri nikuwe peke yangu kabisaa, I will never be in an unhealthy relationship with someone, life is damn too short to be miserable

Ukweli mtupu!

I wish I could say this is fake. I wish I had the courage to dispute it. Sadly though, this rings true and accurate of the Kenyans I have interacted with, and I have been interacting with Kenyans for over 5 decades. Friends, let's reverse this trend.

Chevukati seems to have lost his bait to "TEAM MAFISI" the hard way eehh! Mpaka the dude listed names and their slay queens. To some extend I pity him but "WACHUNGAJI" are doing their thing and fully executing 100%.
Back to the issue of our 254's being dishonest; its relative, if the survey was done in Kisumu then it could right with a margin of error of1% BUT if was conducted in Rift Valley then its false. I wonder what was the sample group and location!!!
Otherwise, it is skewed, to say the least

Nina imani Kenya inaweza kubadilika na kuwa na "dhamiri" na "utu" tena. Hayati Mwalimu Nyerere wa Tanzania alisema, "...It can be done, play your part."

Mimi binafsi nimekula kiapo changu mwenyewe kinachosema:

"Nitamsaidia binadamu mwenzangu iwapo nina uwezo wa kufanya hivyo. Lakini, sitamsadia binadamu mwenzangu nikiwa na madhumuni ya kupokea kitu chochote kwa msaada niliotoa. Sitatoa wala kupokea hongo kutoka kwa binadamu mwenzangu. Kwa azimio hili langu, niko tayari kufa."

Incorrect! I am not commenting on the honesty or lack of, of Kenyans, that I cannot tell and no one can from that study, but I am commenting on this news article and the original study. First the news item is alarmist in its title. And the original scientific study is underpowered (i.e. has very few people from the cities they sampled to claim any valid generalization). Here is why:
Here are issues to have in mind when interpreting the Kenyan section of the results, the principle also being applicable to others.
In Kenya, the original study (link below) only sampled 274 persons out of the total population of 52 million people. Think about that for a second. That translates at the country level, to the action of 1 person in that study being generalized to or representing/speaking for 190,000 Kenyans, or at the city level, with Nairobi as an example, 1 person to the action of 1 person in that study being generalized to or representing/speaking for
83,000 Nairobians!

Another important thing to consider is that the only way the person who collected the wallet could contact the owner was via email, think about that for a second: This assumes that each of those persons who collected the wallets had to have a wallet, if your Mr. City Hawker, or Mama mboga, or indeed anyone who in general would not have access to email collected it, then by default they would not have the chance to contact the owner of the wallet even if they wanted to, hence the study might interpret their actions as being dishonest people. What if they took it to the police station for instance? Its still unlikely the police would write the email to the owner either.

Lastly, the study on focused on only 6 cities/towns in Kenya, sampling an average of 40 persons per city/town. Do you really think that represents a fair generalization of all cities/towns leave alone not having sampled the countryside residents?

In whose interest is this survey?
Who funded it? and what is it's intended purpose?
Who is it trying to uplift and who is is trying to condemn?
Just look at the history of the reporting and learn. Whose soul is in the report?
Interesting!!

I'm wondering what this nonsensical research is aimed to achieve. You are all hell bend on pointing an accusatory finger yet all refugees are pulling up in Kenya.

Westerners ate flocking Kenya investing, some have made Kenya their home. Relocating their children from their countries claimed to be heaven on earth and settling to the beautiful magical Kenya they call home today. Kenya is a home to Somalis, Ethiopia's, south Sudanese, Congolese, rwandese, Ethiopians, Eritrean's, Malawians, Zimbabweans and many more Africans and westerners including Asians who have made Kenya home. How could you then turn and beat the hand that feeds you. Shame on you. Kenya has become a shared country and Kenyans with their joy, happiness, kindness, love and generosity have welcomed every rifruff and ragtag that has sort refuge.

We have been killed, our country terrorised because of the many foreigners we have allowed to share our beautiful country with. We have allowed many to grace our boarders and trade. Kudos Kenyans.

If you are a Kenyan, lift your head up, stand tall and be proud of your self, your country, our people and our sovereign Nation. # I'mkenyan#proudofkenya#proudofmycountry#proudofourpeople

We love and don't hate. Kenya is all about peace, love and unity.

Shame to those who seek to shame Kenya.

I agree with the fact that Kenya is going through rough time. Poverty is the reason for dishonesty. But we cannot ignore the fact that those who need to help us with lost items are the ones dishonest. I mean police officers.

Ukweli (not verified)     Tue, 06/25/2019 @ 09:34am

We Kenyans are so dishonest that many of us on this comment section are claiming that they don't see how this can be! The test might not have been perfect, but are you guys seriously or dishonesty runs that strongly in your psyche? This is typical cooked and funded research by colonialists, sucking Africa dry of it's resources. Now feeling like “gods of truth” dazzling expensive rings with rocks and minerals looted from Africa. If they are lesser liars let them return what they took from Africa and stop playing "Place a wallet" to give us blanket judgement. Whoever funds for such is corrupt himself and a slave to lies.

I tend to agree. And its all linked to our greed and love for money. The levels of corruption, which is dishonesty, also point to this and yet over 75% of kenyans visit a place of worship between friday and monday.

George (not verified)     Wed, 07/03/2019 @ 01:46am

Countries with well performing economies are less likely to have citizens with a stealing culture. The researchers could have tried to conduct the same research in countries with similar economic ratings. It is not entirely true that Kenyans are really that bad because it does also depends on many factors including personal upbringing in family, education and traditional cultural values imparted in individuals. Bias in research is usually expected and may not necessarily reflect the actual reality of things.
