Kenyan Man Arrested in Thailand Carrying 1.2 Kilos of Cocaine in His Stomach
Thailand authorities on Wednesday arrested a 43-year-old Kenyan man for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into the Asian country.
Glenn Chibasellow Ooko was arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok after suspicious contents in his stomach were detected, according to Thailand’s CNA News.
X-ray photos provided by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) showed rectangular objects in Ooko’s belly.
It was later established that the suspect, who had flown from Ethiopia on Monday, was carrying 68 cocaine packets weighing 1.2 kilograms.
“He swallowed cocaine weighing 1.2 kilograms, which were in 68 packets,” the ONCB said in a statement.
Ooko was apprehended alongside another suspect identified as Osita Joseph Ukpa, a Nigerian national who is alleged to have hired him to smuggle the narcotics.
Drug trafficking is a capital offense in Thailand and is punishable by death.
Thailand is reported to be one of the major drugs smuggling hubs in the world due to its porous borders and lax law enforcement, making it easier for transnational crime networks to transport narcotics.
