79,982: The Number of Kenyans Earning over Sh100,000 Per Month

A new report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that only 79,982 employed Kenyans earn a monthly salary of Sh100,000 and above.

This represents an increase of 3,178 (4.1 percent) compared to 2018, making it the highest growth among the salaried workers in the country since the government began compiling the data on income.

The number of salaried workers receiving pay of more than Sh100,000 is 2.89 percent of the 2.77 million formal workers captured in the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) database, according to Business Daily.

The report, which will be released officially next week, places the gross monthly per capita income at Sh16,833.

74.58 percent of all workers listed with KRA pocket below Sh50,000, 10 percent (274,645) earned between Shh0 to Sh19,999 while those earning between Ksh20,000 to 49,999 were 65 percent (1,787,302).

Among workers earning over Sh100,000, 63.4 percent (50,749) are men while the rest are women, revealing a big gender disparity.

68,526 of the top earners (Sh100,000 and above) are working in the private sector, representing 85 percent while the public sector employs 11,456 of the top earners.

Despite being among the largest contributors to the country’s GDP, the Agriculture sector has the lowest number of the top earners at 3.7 percent.

The education sector at 22 percent (17,808) has the highest number of the top earners including lecturers, high school teachers, and administrators.

This only represents formally employed people. Property owners with huge rental incomes and a myriad of other types of business owners are not included here. Most people in the know will tell you that there is lots more money in Thika Rd than there is in Kilimani and Kileleshwa.
