Atheists Want Religious Studies Scrapped from Kenya’s School Syllabus

Atheists in Kenya Society (AIK) has called for the abolishment of religious studies from the Kenyan education system.

AIK president Nyende Mumia said Christian, Islamic, and Hindu Religious Education (CRE, IRE, and HRE) should be scrapped from the curriculum.

He argues that the inclusion of CRE, IRE, and HRE in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is flawed as it assumes that Kenya only has three religions—Christianity, Islam, and Hindu.

Instead, the atheists' group proposed that religious education be replaced with philosophy and ethics.

“We propose the introduction of a new subject called Philosophy and Ethics to replace CRE, IRE, and HRE that will provide an inclusive and neutral environment for pupils to better understand and explore the views and opinions of people whose beliefs and values differ from their own,” said Mumia.

Mumia stated that the new subject will include “objective education about religious belief, but not to the detriment of other important philosophical and ethical perspectives like humanism, atheism, Buddhism, polytheism, naturalism e.t.c.”

AIK urged the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to consider the society’s proposal in its review of the CBC.

“Religious Education reform is a necessary process at this point in time, especially now that a number of stakeholders are raising concerns with regards to the Competency-Based Curriculum. We would like the KICD to afford the country an opportunity to revisit, revise and appraise its religious education system, especially the teaching of CRE, IRE and HRE.”

You don't fight religion, you fight for your religion. Come with a curriculum for the Atheists. Christians study Islam, muslims study Jewish, etc.

Big Brother America has for years grapples with this issue of religion in schools.I stand corrected, but I believe that religion on American schools is taught as literature. And that is how religion influences, and impacts society.
Undoubtedly religion has a big influence is shaping our moral, and ethical values. In that regard, I see no reason to remove is from our curriculum. We should teach it as literature. That way,its not used to proselytize. We leave that to houses of worship.
Mumia is not stupid. He understands that there is no way our society/schools would introduce teaching of etheism as a subject.I believe since philosophy partly deals with existence, etheism is covered there. A gain,at what level should philosophy be introduces in the curriculum.Mumia does not clarify that. Can you imagine your 8 year old coming home and telling you,"Mwalimu Lukoye amesema hakuma Mungu, na wewe ulisema Mungu yuko..." Critical thinking should be left to institutions of higher learning, and I believe that's where philosophy is taught as well.My two cents.

I find myself agreeing. I went through CRE but abandoned that belief system after questioning it and being told I had to take it on faith. That went over like a lead balloon with me. The idea that my ancestors before 1900 ce went to hell because they didn't meet white people was quite possibly the most idiotic and definitely racist things I'd ever heard. I was fourteen and never looked back. I say teach all religions or none at all. It really should not be the state's place to pick and choose one religion over another no matter if adherents believe in Nyasae, Ngai, Murungu, Mulungu or numerous others especially given that only ones picked originate in foreign lands and definitely put black people at the bottom.

You are the racist here. Jesus never put black people at the bottom, unlike religious leaders like muhammad who referred to black people as raisin heads according to islamic literature. The idea that people can by themselves go to heaven without Jesus and without the gospel is saying that anyone who murdered, who lied, who did not live perfect lives went to heaven, without ever having been forgiven for anything they had done.

A fool says in his heart that there's no God. They believe a lie from the devil who knows there is God.
Atheist must know Muslims and Christians started schools. Harvard was started to teach pastors. Atheist can start their own school.

So which God? I sense from your comments that you believe in the one who is both all vengeful and all merciful, a contradiction if I every heard one. Who determines the approved faith and what is your issue with MweneNyaga if any? Why are some religions more equal than others?

God who created Adam. He doesn't punish anymore until judgement day. Only punishment is bc of rejecting Jesus. Other religions do not recognize Jesus who's the only way to the Father so they will end up sending many to hell. Mwenenyaga fall into category of Baal, Allah, and all other gods who have no ears or eyes.

Yeah my skin looks nothing like those people from the middle east. I am a son of Mūmbi who was created along with Gīkūyü by MweneNyaga not the son of some incestuous middle eastern people created by a vengeful, jealous and furious god (his words not mine) out of mud. Which parts of the bible do you prefer to ignore btw? Do you ignore the parts where the hebrew god clearly supports slavery or fratricide, collective punishment to the 3rd and 4th generation, disease peddling, wanton murder, and cruel displays of power? But hey to each his own.

In old Testament there was no redemption because Jesus hadn't been born. The only way to destroy sin was destroy every man woman child animal bec they were demonized and could not be redeemed. E.g. Sodom and Gomorrah and flood of Noah. Noah and his family were the only ones perfect in his generation (genes=DNA). The rest were hybrids or nephilim like goliath i.e. reptilian man. In last days like now you see identity crisis of LGBT i.e. messing up human genes again. New Testament there's no more slavery or God's wrath. His wrath is reserved for judgment. U talk about other gods. All these gods came up as Adam and Eve and generations moved further away from God in the garden. Nimrod son of Ham was a black man who build tower of Babel. Jesus had black disciples like Niger, Lucius

@ So Woke, you seem to know a thing or two about the Bible. Please enlighten me on why your God would give ahuman being a brain and yet punish him or her for using it.In fact the Omniscient God who knows what you will do before you do it should lovingly correct you before you do the wrong thing.Even worse, why does he allow earth quakes, hurricanes, covid19,deceases ...kill alot of his children whom I believe he loves so much?I would also like to know if it is possible to heal acripple or a blind man the way Jesus did... I ask this questions with respect, and would like to know the answers,if there are any satisfactory ones.

The Trinity said let us make man in our image and likeness and gave him free will so mankind has a choice to obey or disobey. In Deuteronomy 28 God gave blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. Its the law, an instruction for living. Adam fell yet he knew not to. Conscience also lets man know wrong and right. God doesn't control mankind or events on earth in this fallen world. Bad things in humans animals and physical earth happen due to degradation caused by fall of Adam. Jesus does heal everything but requires either faith of the patient or minister. In new Testament unbelief led to Jesus healing a few ppl. Unbelief opposes faith. He has healed me of many things; lupus, back pain, typhoid etc. Yes the crippled can be healed. The enemy came to steal kill and destroy.

How much do you have to twist yourself to even write such? There was God, then he became his son and was co-joined by a third spirit that was declared holy! Amazing. And Mary's pregnancy had to be devoid of sex; and this is revealed to Joseph by an angel, then passed to us through hearsay! wow! I know there were more than 20,000 gods when mythology was the order of the day in Palestine and I can see how Jewish tradition and roman mythology led to this trinity BS. But you can believe what you want...in most cases it is harmless.

Anyway, what's your view on Islam? Muslims dont believe in Trinity. They dont believe Jesus was crucified,or is even God in flesh. The also believe that It was not I saac but Ibrahim that was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb. These are big differences for sure. Each side Iam sure claims to be correct. How can we solve this stalemate,In your opinion?

@maxiley Jesus said no one is good except the Father. Believing Jesus is all you need to enter heaven;no need for works to get in. Jesus did everything to give you the ticket.
Islam like many religions and beliefs came out of Satan's tactics to keep ppl from God. He provided A fake alternative. Muslims believe in witchcraft which is against the Bible. Muslims came out of Ishmael a son of Abraham but Isaac was a son of covenant with God. Healing by Jesus and his appearance to Muslims has made them turn to Christ

@So woke,if God does not control events in the world, then who creates rain, thunder, hurricane, and earthquakes? It would also appear futile to pray since God does not control harmful events on this earth. Therefore correct me if Iam wrong, but I feel that a person who survives a plane crash where 99% of passengers die should not thank God,because by your own reasoning God does not control such things. What say you?

@ maxiley God created rain just before the flood of Noah. Before then there was no rain. Due to sin the earth has been degraded and so everything bad is caused by the devil. People lived almost 900 years in the beginning that shows you earth was near pure and genes near pure unlike now. God gave authority to mankind and Jesus reclaimed it back to mankind after Adam gave it over to Satan. We pray for God's intervention and also bind the enemy from causing hurricanes, etc. Jesus rebuked the storm as an example for us. If you survive an accident you have God to thank for His grace and protection over you. Without His protection victim would be dead. But still accident is an act of human error or the devil directly. God has set laws to live by on earth. Watch pastor Tony Kemp and Kevin Zadai on the supernatural on YouTube.

@So-woke but didn't Paul directly tell slaves to obey their masters or is that not part of the new testament. I know I don't read that beautiful work of fiction any more but I guarantee I could find passages that indicate that your god condoned slavery, and through his mouthpieces encouraged slaves to stay servile and obeisant to their masters in both new and old testaments. Oh yeah, there was also quite a bit of sexual and physical abuse by masters of slaves and he kept silent. Either he was wrong or his mouthpieces misinterpreted his will. Either way it means he or the bible is wrong. Feel free to reinterpret the bible or his mouthpieces for me.

Slavery and colonism was evident during the writing of the new Testament. Paul sent Onesmus a runaway slave back to Philemon his master as required by Roman law but asked him to not treat Onesmus as a slave but a brother in Christ. Slavery was caused by fall of man again. Jesus lived under Roman colonial rule but never came against it. He respected authority since authority comes from God. He was crucified Roman style accordingly to save mankind. Paul told slaves aka servants to obey masters after getting saved. I believe the opposite i.e. rebellion or guerilla warfare was not feasible then. It would not have achieved desired results. All authority comes from God. A tranquil dictatorship is better than anarchy. There's a season and time for everything like now slavery is illegal. Just like every system of mankind there's always abuse same way police or military would abuse their power.

Slavery no matter how the master treats you is still slavery. Your non black god condoned it. It's not caused by the fall of anyone. It's your god who commands slaves to stay slaves so they can get theirs in heaven. That sounds like a defence of the status quo to me by your god. When an evil man in authority asks you to perform an evil act, do you do as he commands? The "I was just following orders" defence is the logical conclusion of your god's command. It has and continues to be used to justify atrocities and the leading spreaders of the gospel (white people) are the leading practitioners. Saying it's a product of the times is also excusing the indefensible. MweneNyaga's creation and most of Kenya's ethnic groups didn't own slaves, didn't commit mass murder, didn't go robbing and pillaging and with the exception of occasional skirmishes, lived peacefully with their neighbors. And then the bible was introduced. The results are evident in Kenya today. Who's more enlightened? Your god and his revealed work written by fallible men and selectively edited has been used to subjugate, steal from, oppress people for nearly two millennia. If the results of an instructional manual appear to produce bad results again and again, you should question the source and the manual. It is a violent, cruel and misogynistic work and all the reinterpretation and picking the 2nd half and ignoring the origins doesn't change that.

No man, Christians stopped slavery. They are the reason it is illegal. What reason would atheists have to stop slavery? Christians were prepared to fight with other Christians over this and get enough petitions to end it. Also in the modern world we still have slavery, don't act like we don't have it today. In fact if you compare it in the OT, if you had a LOT of debt you could not pay only then would you sell yourself as a slave and 7 years later you'd be let free after that. Slavery is when you have nothing else to offer but have an enormous amount of debt.

Try to take away candy from a kid you will regret.

In my opinion, it is wiser to make candy readily available and let people choose to consume it or not; just like alcohol, religion or sex.

Let christianity reign, but also don't inhibit islam, deism, Buddhism, atheism, monkism, akorinosim, trumpism, you name it.

People want to cling to some kind of belief or none, be it guns or religion or anti vaccine. Why take it away from them? Let them be.

All of us will agree that there is a more superior Power. It's does matter what we call Him. GOD, ALLAH, NGAI,NYASAE etc.
The issue is everyone believing that their GOD is more superior than my GOD.
We also have to understand that religion has and will continue to be used as a political tool, manipulating the masses.
The issue here is how religion is used.
Now this is where Men decides or interpret religion to suit their end game.

Let all religions stay alive and well. When SPIRITUALITY and truth starts to reign supreme, if those religions are real, they will survive; if they are fake, they will self- destroy.
Bring your Aithesim, and add to what we already have. If it's real it will survive, if fake it will die a slow death.

Ukisoma kwa makini Warumi kuanzia mlango wa 13 (Romans 13), utaona ya kwamba bibilia ni kitabu cha ukoloni mtupu. Isitoshe, ni kitabu kinachoeneza utumwa wa binadamu.

" Romans 13
New International Version
Submission to Governing Authorities
13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor."

Dbeijxbejskjc (not verified)     Fri, 10/08/2021 @ 09:31am

Philosophy and ethics does not form a good moral standard. Because whatever you do, any sort of philosophy or ethic can be used to justify it. On the other hand Christianity is a good thing for students to learn. To see it excluded from schools is just another form of what social media is doing already, because Jesus said if people hated Him they will hate Christians too.

Dbeijxbejskjc (not verified)     Fri, 10/08/2021 @ 09:36am

Christians are the only ones who self sacrificially crossed borders to love people and point to Jesus. So it is necessary to teach in schools. Atheists are people who try to take everything Christian and disconnect it from Christ. They want to change AD and BC to some other, they want to replace religious studies with philosophy. If the schools did not teach religious studies would they be so hyped up about philosophy? No. They just want to remove Christianity from the curriculum.
