Former Mt Elgon MP John Serut Dies of Cancer in Nairobi

Former Mount Elgon Member of Parliament John Serut has passed away aged 67.

Serut died of cancer while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital on Wednesday morning, according to his daughter Michelle Chemoss.

His death comes barely five months after Chemoss took to social media to appeal for assistance in clearing her dad’s Sh20 million medical bill. “Hey guys, so a lot of you don’t know me but I’m here requesting your help today. My father’s name is John Serut and he’s been unwell for a while now,” she wrote on Twitter.

Chemoss divulged that her father was suffering from multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects multiple organs, including the kidneys, bones, and liver.

“So far, we’ve handled this as a family but we’re now reaching out to you for help. We need the amount on top to cater for an insurance cover as we have exhausted the existing one due to bills amounting to Sh14 million this year alone,” she said.

She continued: “Healthcare in this country is quite expensive. Every time he’s been in hospital this year the bill has been no less than Sh3 million.”

Serut represented Mt Elgon constituency in parliament for two terms and lost his seat to Fred Kapondi of the Jubilee party in the 2017 general elections.

Some cancers and diseases are incurable based on stage & severity! However Kenyan doctors lacks ethics, they don’t tell the patient or the family the truth, they keep sucking all the family’s & community’s resources till someone dies! I see such cases oftentimes!
