Wanjigi Wants President Uhuru to Account for 'Missing' $1 Billion Euro Bond Funds

Presidential aspirant Jimi Wanjigi wants the Jubilee government to account for the Eurobond funds before exiting office later this year.

Wanjigi, who is the Safina party presidential candidate, claims President Kenyatta’s administration cannot account for Eurobond funds amounting to $1 billion (over Sh100 billion).

"The Eurobond theft is one never seen before in this country's history and Kenyans must demand to know from none other than President Uhuru Kenyatta where the US dollars one billion his government is yet to account for went," Wanjigi said.

The businessman-turned-politician also accused the Jubilee government of undertaking infrastructure projects that continue to overburden the Kenyan taxpayers.

"We have borrowed money we never should have. We have engaged in projects that continue to burden Kenyans every day making them poorer and poorer,” added Wanjigi.

He cited the Nairobi-Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, whose cost he claims was inflated. 

"One such project is the SGR which cost us Sh380 billion from Mombasa to Nairobi yet we could have done a better job with only Sh55 billion from Mombasa to Malaba had this government adopted the initial plan we had," the businessman noted.

He says that Kenyans are losing over Sh27 million per day to operate the SGR, which maintains was not a priority for Kenyans.

"The SGR is an accumulation of debt. It is not generating any income that can meet the debt it is burdening Kenyans with. It is simply a white elephant project," Wanjigi said.

He added: “Today, Kenyans are paying for a project they never needed in the first place. The railway levy is in every aspect of taxation today whether you use the railway or not. This is wrong."
