Kenyans to Pay a Fee to Obtain the 2022 Voter Register, IEBC Says

The voter register to be used in the August 9th general elections is finally available to the public, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced.

On Monday, IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said those interested in the register will be required to pay a nominal fee to the commission to access it.

“As a commission, we have the voter’s register which has been duplicated, certified and gazetted and those who have been asking for it will pay a nominal fee and you will get it through our CEO,” Chebukati said.

Chebukati spoke on Monday during the National Conference on Election Preparedness at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi where he assured Kenyans that the upcoming election will be free, fair and credible. He called on voters to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic right to vote.

“The commission journey to preparing for the upcoming election started way back after the 2017 election by doing a post-election evaluation and report provided important insights into the conduct of the 2017 election and in specific what worked and what did not work and areas of improvement. We are therefore moving on as a strong commission ready to deliver the election,” he stated.

“The commission will count each vote cast because each vote counts,” he assured.

Political stakeholders led by the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga have been pressuring IEBC to make the register public as part of measures to secure the integrity of the election.

Chebukati said the register has 22,120, 458 voters who include voters in the diaspora and prison. He indicated that the commission registered voters in Kenyan Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates in countries and enlisted 3,538 new voters in the diaspora to bring the total number of diaspora voters to 10,443.

The diaspora voters are based in the US, UK, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Germany, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Africa.
