Senegal Announces National Holiday to Celebrate AFCON Victory
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared Monday a paid public holiday to mark Senegal’s victory over Morocco in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The announcement was made shortly after the Lions of Teranga secured their second continental title, three years after winning their first. Speaking on national broadcaster RTS, President Faye called on the public to celebrate responsibly and to prepare to welcome the team on their return. He said the players would be received and congratulated for their achievement.
The final, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, was decided after a tense and closely contested match. With the score still level in stoppage time, referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR review of a challenge involving Brahim Diaz. The decision was disputed by Senegal’s players.
Diaz attempted a chipped penalty, but goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved the effort. Earlier in added time, Senegal had a goal by Ismaila Sarr disallowed for a foul, adding to the sense of frustration on the pitch. In extra time, Senegal took the lead when Idrissa Gueye scored from distance, a goal that proved decisive in front of a crowd of more than 66,000 spectators.
The victory confirms Senegal’s position among Africa’s leading football nations and reflects the consistency of the current squad at major tournaments. The public holiday announced by the President places the achievement at the centre of national life, allowing citizens to take part in the celebrations.
The government’s decision also recognises the team’s performance under pressure during a match marked by key officiating decisions and late drama. Public celebrations are expected across the country as supporters mark the national team’s latest success.
