The WIDU.africa initiative recently conducted a visit to Eldoret, Kenya, to assess the impact of the Kenyan diaspora on their home communities.
Led by Mr. Boniface Munzala and Ms. Fridah Kibuko, the delegation aims to evaluate the progress of the GIZ-implemented program. WIDU.africa supports small businesses in Africa through coaching and funding, partially sourced from the African diaspora in Europe. The group toured several notable projects, including Riley Bohan Foods Limited, Mutton City Farm, and the Red Royal Cake House. These ventures, focusing on dried vegetable production, sustainable livestock management, and cake-making respectively, exemplify the diverse economic contributions of the diaspora.
The delegation also participated in the official opening of the Siloam Eye Clinic which affirms the diaspora's role in enhancing healthcare access. The Kenyan government, through the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, recognizes the substantial socio-economic impact of the diaspora community. It remains committed to facilitating collaborations and partnerships that benefit local communities across Kenya. By bringing back financial resources and valuable skills, Kenyans living abroad create jobs, foster innovation, and significantly enhance the local economy.
In a related event, WIDU.africa participated in the Kenyan Women in Germany (KWIG) 2024 event in Mainz, Germany, on September 7th. This gathering celebrated the achievements of Kenyan women in Germany and highlighted their crucial role in economic and social development. The event featured panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions that provided a platform for Kenyan women to share their experiences, challenges, and successes. A key highlight of the KWIG 2024 event was a panel discussion on the diaspora's role in promoting sustainable development in Kenya.
Successful Kenyan entrepreneurs, academics, and community leaders shared insights on leveraging diaspora skills, knowledge, and resources to drive positive change in their home country. The event also showcased products and services offered by Kenyan women entrepreneurs in Germany, including handmade crafts, fashion items, and food products. This exhibition provided an opportunity for entrepreneurs to market their products, expand their customer base, and build valuable business connections. Additionally, workshops addressing important social issues such as mental health, legal rights, and financial literacy were conducted to empower Kenyan women living in Germany.
