B1/B2 Visa Denied Despite Strong Travel History: Applicant Describes Harsh Interview Experience

A B1/B2 visa applicant’s recent interview at the US Embassy in New Delhi has highlighted concerns about the treatment of applicants during the visa process, particularly in high-pressure consulates.

The applicant, a 23-year-old student, had planned to travel to New York with their parents, both of whom had already secured visas. However, the interview, which began without delay, quickly became tense and uncomfortable.

The officer, reportedly the only Indian officer present that day, did not acknowledge the applicant’s greeting and immediately requested the passport before launching into a series of probing questions. The tone was described as hostile, with the officer reportedly rejecting several applicants throughout the day.

Despite a strong travel history, including visits to Europe and Southeast Asia, the applicant faced intense scrutiny, particularly regarding their academic status. The officer questioned why the applicant, at 23, was still pursuing a bachelor’s degree, despite the applicant’s explanation of personal challenges, including a gap year, family issues, and a recent bereavement.

These reasons, however, appeared to provoke further interrogation rather than understanding. The interview ended with a visa refusal, leaving the applicant feeling shocked and distressed. The officer mentioned that the applicant could reapply once their circumstances changed, but no further guidance was provided.

This incident underscores the difficulties faced by visa applicants, especially in busy consulates where officers must make quick decisions under pressure. While consular officers are tasked with enforcing immigration policies, the subjective nature of these evaluations can lead to inconsistent outcomes.

The emotional toll of such interviews is significant, especially when family travel is involved.
