Transport Principal Secretary Esther Koimett has clarified that the government will import 11 used commuter trains from Spain at a cost of Sh1.5 billion.
Taking to social media, PS Koimmet has termed as untrue reports that the government had set aside Sh10 billion for the purchase of the second-hand locomotives.
She has also shared photos of the old locomotives the government will be buying for the Nairobi commuter train service.
“These are the actual DMUs (Diesel Multiple Units) we are getting. Cost for the 11 DMUs is Ksh1.5 billion NOT Ksh10 billion,” she says in a post.
PS Koimmet further notes that though the trains are used, they will be in service for the next 20 to 25 years.
She further explains that the trains are expected to ferry around 132,000 commuters daily from the current 13,000 per day.
"They should serve us for another 20 - 25 years. When the full complement is in, they will enable us to transport around 132,000 people a day compared to the 13,000 we do today," PS Koimmet notes.
The purchase of the trains is part of the government's plan to decongest the Nairobi central business district.
The government is also importing 64 high-capacity buses from South Africa to be deployed for the bus rapid transit (BRT) plan in Nairobi.

OBSOLETE! Not absolute.
And please don't respond and say it is semantics.
Kenya. What is your alternative? I hope not to buy new trains which cost 100b.
I'll not be in doubt by next month if the story could be different with a small scandal on the side.
So Koimett we know it's in the blood just do your thing we'll understand. We ignorant wanachini will learn later
if these are the actual trains you are bidding for, the top photo is a photoshop (with the ghostly guy) and the trains are as old as the chipping paint can tell. On a second thought are the train still running as the second one seems to be at a station platform?
Who had said it was 10 billion? the same government in the name of Koimett. the had to beat a retreat when Kenyans questioned the deal. Meaning 8.5 billion was to vanish into someones pockets. Penye moshi pana moto. DPP, DCI EACC hapa kuna moto kwa hii deal ya koimett.
Hehehehe i said n wrote it here that i will wait to pass my comments juu as usual wazungu wetu weusi wakenya in diaspora loves negatives about their mother country kenya. Now the gavament have clarified its 1.5b not 10b which i had said it doesn't make sure to buy old for 10b when our chinese freds can deliver new ones with 10b.I went to kikuyu station nainanjengwa poa sana so cannot wait to ride on them.
It may still be 10billion at the end of the deal, since cartels must eat. Watch out Kenyans.
Why waste 1.5B with absolute trains that will end up in a junk yards? Why are not worth a penny.
