Kenyan Motorists Set to Cruise at 130 Kilometers Per Hour on Major Highways in New Bill

Kiambu Member of Parliament Jude Njomo has tabled a bill that seeks to allow private motorists to cruise at a speed of up to 130 kilometers per hour on Kenyan major highways.

If MPs approve the bill, private cars will be allowed to cruise at the top speed on dual carriageways and roads classified as Class “A” and "B”.

The current maximum speed limit for private vehicles on major highways is 110 kilometers per hour while the lowest is 30kph.

For Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), school vans, motorcycles, and light commercial vehicles, the maximum speed limit is 80 kilometers per hour.

In the bill dubbed the Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2019, Njomo also wants slow moving vehicles traveling at speeds of below 70 kilometers per hour to drive on the extreme left lane.

"Every superhighway shall be classified either as Class A or Class B roads, have the lane to the extreme left reserved for slow-moving vehicles and have the maximum speed limit set as follows: One hundred kilometers per hour for public service vehicles including buses, mini-buses, coaches, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles and one hundred and thirty kilometers per hour for motorcars," the bill reads.

Wish he could include a requirement that all Class A and B roads be regularly painted and have traffic signs.
